my fall must-haves.

Fall always has and probably always will feel for me like a time for reinvention.

Every August I am taken back to my school days.  The days of shopping and planning weeks ahead of time exactly what I would be wearing on that pivotal first day of school.  There was always a feeling that I could start over and be anything I wanted with little more than some new jeans and cute shoes.

Even though I’m a grown-up now, that feeling of being able to reinvent myself by way of fashion has never left me.

Every year when magazines come out with fall fashions, I’m completely sucked in.  I got the September issue of Lucky and I poured over it for about two hours straight and even ran out of those little sticky tabs that come with it.  It was incredible.  After my perusal I’ve decided that my wardrobe cannot be without these items this season:

prairie-ish/combat boots.
a multi-strand necklace.
And this one’s only $30!
a classic Timex watch.
the perfect neutral heel.
a pair of boyfriend jeans that actually fits properly!
cargo skinnies.
laceless oxfords.
regular oxfords.
a tuxedo-esque jacket.
a military-esque jacket.
a lady-like-esque jacket.
a drapey leather jacket.
so unexpected!
paired with tops made of delicate fabrics and prints
like these….

*Update:  Since I started this post over the weekend, I actually did a bit of shopping with some birthday money and came up with some great (and cheap!) finds!  My fall wardrobe list is coming along quite nicely :).  I’ll take photos soon and post some of my new looks!

What are some of your Fall “must-haves”?

  1. I love your choice of fall styles. I always loved taking you school clothes shopping. I use to love the smile that you got on your face when you found the perfect outfit. It was also neat to see what outfit you would come up with for your first day back to school. I am really looking forward to you and your lovely friend Jamie helping me with fall styles for when I get back to work. I think I will have 2 of the best style designers on my side, can’t wait! 🙂

  2. Those boots in the first picture is amazing! Also love the oxfords, need to get me a pair 🙂

  3. I adore the oxfords and skinny cargos.

  4. I love those boots and the laceless oxfords!

I haven’t got round to what I’m going to add yet but I’m starting to see so much inspiration in the blog world I’m being very tempted to go out and shop 🙂

  5. Yay! way to go on your “fall must haves” shopping list! I’m loving a lot of those tops!- i haven’t really looked close enough at the fashions for fall yet.. so I’ll get back to you on my “must haves” for fall.. haha.. but i’m liking your ideas. Can’t wait to see what u got!

  6. Great list. Love the three last tops. Sigh. 🙂 A must have this fall for me, is a raincoat with flowers on it, and tada…I got one!!! 🙂 Never had a raincoat, and never a girlie one, so I’m super proud about that. Now, thinking about fall wardrobe…I do have to go out and buy me a magazine so I can dream about possible new stuff. 😉 That is, if I can afford it, and if my closet allows any more stuff in it…which at times point it doesn’t. 🙁

    Happy Wednesday.

  7. I love that oxfords!

  8. I love the change of the seasons 🙂 I can’t wait to pull on my favorite sweaters and bask in the crispness of the air. (Until it turns freezing again, and then I’ll just be miserable.)

  9. i love the timex, total classic 🙂

    x.

  10. Love all your picks Lauren! Especially the Vince cargos and the leather jacket! I always add at least one pair of tall boots to my collection ever Fall and I’ll be looking for some skinny cargos and new skinny jeans.

  14. I love those natural heels and all the adorable blouses. I must add them to my must haves. 😉

  15. You are making me feel so old, because I’m 26 and will be 27 in November! HAha, I know what you mean though, and I am constantly telling myself that I need to dress more “grown up.”

My problem is that I have a baby face, and most people think that I’m barely 22…so it’s actually frustrating! I love your choices for fall though…I can’t wait for pretty scarves and sweaters!

  16. ok craig is so sweet with his note! and i totally love your oxfords!!!!

my fall must haves have nothing to do with clothes…. but clothes sure would be nice too!

    xo. thanks.
    xo. thanks.

  23. I feel the same way about fall and I am looking forward over the next few weeks when I start updating my wardrobe! I love sweaters and boots, I could live in them.

  24. Such a good list! I was just trying on a pair of Steve Madden oxfords lastnight at Nordstrom that I want for my birthday and you can choose to have the laces in or out…cutest things I’ve ever seen and I love that you get the option of laces! (they look pretty similar to the first ones on your list). You should definitely go check them out!

PS:that watch reminds me of you just by looking at it. I think you need it. 🙂

  25. great list! fall is always the best for new clothes… that back-to-school feeling lingers long after graduation 🙂

  26. my fall must haves are: a pair of brown riding boots! I’ve wanted these for years and never seem to find the right pair. This year it is the year! I also want to wear lots of black. I’m not sure why but I’m feeling the all black, Kelly Cutrone sort of look for fall! Some grey oxfords would be spiffy as well!

  27. I’m excited to see what you actually bought! I love some of the stuff you found online. I really like those oxfords. I just wish that some of the great sites weren’t so expensive!

  28. LOVE that watch! And its funny, I was just saying the other day how fall makes me feel like Im about to start school again, and how it was always “this is a new year, a new me – a new wardrobe.”

  29. I started a fashion journal for myself and quite a few things on your list are on mine! In particular the military inspired jacket and the basic black blazer. And the boyfriend jeans!!

  30. Great choices for Fall essentials!
I love the concept of reinvention in autumn as well, such a perfect time for a style evolution!

  32. I’ve been trying to convince my husband for weeks about the amazing potential of oxfords, skinny cargos and military-esque boots…Thank you for giving me more proof!!

  33. oh no, this post really, really makes me want to go shopping. thanks a lot lauren!

i’m going to go to a few cheap vintage shops in haight-ashbury, so hopefully i’ll come home with some cute new (to me) clothes!
