sometimes we have man dates.

Saturday my friend Jamie and I had a man date.

You might be confused at this point, so let me explain.  No….there were no men present.  It was just us girls.  BUT….we got together and did a bunch of things that are sterotypically “male” (i.e. drinking whiskey, eating steak and going the an army surplus store) and had a fantastic time doing it.

First stop:

We took a tour of the distillery and had a tasting.  Best whiskey ever.  I took home a bottle of their White Dog Whiskey from their limited release line for Craig – truth be told at first I just wanted to buy it for the pretty apothecary bottle, but our tasting changed my mind.  It has really great flavor and a very smooth finish.  I’m not a big drinker and I’d never been to a distillery before, so I was pleasantly surprised and I learned a lot.

Next stop:

We were due for lunch after our tasting, so we stopped here and I had a delicious steak and egg and blue cheese sandwich.  SO good.

    Final Stop:
     Andy and Bax

I seriously thought I’d died and gone to heaven in this place – who knew the Army surplus store was an untapped treasure trove of fashion and decor possibilities?  I even told the guy at the cash wrap that this was the best place ever.  I think he thought I was strange.  But seriously….this place had everything!  ….clones, banjos, sherpas, furkels…. oh….sorry…..I’m channeling my inner Stefon.  But really – I got a cool beanie, some cute little tins to pot plants in (Craig later informed me that these are canteen holders), miscellaneous hardware and army blousing garters to use in jewelry making, some cool airplane playing cards.  It’s also the place to go if you’re looking for a classic Navy peacoat or striped sailor shirt or a perfectly on-trend Army field jacket on the cheap.  I’m also dreaming of the Army trunk below for a side table.  I’m smitten, but Craig is unconvinced that it will look cohesive in our space.  Seriously Craig?  You have to think twice about purchasing a manly Army trunk?  I could see if I was trying to bring in a floral couch, but come on!  This shouldn’t even be a question – it’s awesome!

So….
To summarize:

Drinking whiskey
+
eating steak
+
shopping at a place that sells work boots & grenades
=
best man date two girls could have :).

  2. Aww that’s fun, I love it! Although I hate whiskey lol….

  3. You surely did have the good weekend. I never thought of going to the places men go for shopping, but there are under ground spots for women!

  4. That sounds like such a fun day, I want to visit a distillery now! OMG, I totally laughed out loud at work over the Stefon thing… awesome.

  5. Next time, I am so joining!!!!!! What an ideal day!

  6. What a fun/unique date! I used to go with my dad to the army surplus store all the time when I was little:-) xoxo

  7. I love Andy and Bax! I haven’t been there in years, though. Maybe I’ll take a trip next week 🙂

  8. Your Stefon reference absolutely cracked me up. He is one of my favorite SNL characters.

  9. I’ve always wanted to go to an Army surplus store and your trip makes me want to go even more! It looks wonderful!

  10. Haha, that is awesome. Sounds like a fun date. With an Air Force hubby we’ve been to our share of exchange/surplus stores – so many cool things to find there!

  11. A military surplus store here in Buena Park has an old Saturn 5 engine mockup. I’ve always wanted to make a planter out of it. My man thinks such thoughts are almost sacrilegious. Military stores and Home Depot, such fun…

  12. That does sound like an awesome place to shop. I want to go to Smith & Wesson here because they have everything, you just have to shift through a lot of junk to get to anything. They seriously have like old trucks and random stuff from WWII in their fields. I totally want to see what I can find.
