getting more bang for your baby fashion buck.

Dressing Fern is one of my favorite things.

Even though dressing myself isn’t always the most fun these days with my post-baby body, dressing a cute baby girl is always fun.
But, just because I like to dress Fern in cute things doesn’t mean I like to spend a ton of money on her wardrobe.  I’m always trying to come up with ways to get more bang for my buck when it comes to baby clothes.
Here are some of my suggestions:
1.  Stick to solids and simple patterns when choosing basics.
-When buying basics like onesies, socks, cardigans, etc., I like to choose gender neutral colors and simple patterns (like stripes), because they’re easier to match with a variety of outfits and I’ll be able to recycle them for Baby #2 one day if we end up having a boy.  These are a good example of cute, simple onesies.
2.  Try to buy things in a larger size.
-In the photo above, the “dress” Fern is wearing is actually a size 2T tank top.  Sometimes buying a larger size just looks ridiculous, but the times when you can make it work are great, because you get more wear out of one item.  When Fern is bigger she can wear this cute dress as a shirt.  You can also do this with dresses as they can be worn as tunics with leggings later.  And with pants, smaller pants can turn into capris and larger jeans can be cuffed before they’re actually the proper length.
3.  Have fun with accessories.
-One you have the basics for an outfit, all you have to do is layer up an exciting accessory and you’re golden.  Sometimes I add a cute scarf-style patterned bib to one of Fern’s outfits to add interest.  Both adorable and functional.
And, aside from suggestion #2 (“buy things in a larger size”), these work for dressing your grown-up self too :).

  1. A tank top? That’s so creative of you! It really looks like a dress and by the way, she is the cutest little thing with her smiles!

  2. #2 is a great idea! Something to keep in mind if I ever have a girl. 🙂

  3. The first picture (tank top dress) is SO STINKIN’ ADORABLE! Who taught her to pose like that?!

  4. Disney Baby is so exciting! Congrats! And I never would have thought to buy a tank and use it as a dress, genius!

  5. Such wonderful tips! Simple but golden.

  6. Love your baby dressing tips 🙂

  7. Awesome tips! I love it. I always buy G her clothes a size up too, they look a little baggy but they last so much longer.

  9. Haha. This made me laugh because Olivia has a couple of dresses (in smaller sizes) that she totally wears as shirts now. And nobody’s the wiser! Well, at least not until I blurt out things like, “This is a size 18 month dress on my almost 3 year old!” But still.

  10. I like the photo with Fern and the oversized white “dress”. Her smile is just too adorable. I swear, seeing how cute Fern is makes me want to have babies of my own.
