choose wisely.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I surround myself with and I’ve been thinking a lot about this quote.
I’ve encountered both of these kinds of people recently:
the inspiring kind and the draining kind.
I’ve realized who my real and true friends are. These are the ones who I can be open, honest and vulnerable with. The friends who I can share the most unlovely parts of my life with and know that they will still love me and won’t judge my shortcomings. The kind of friends where it doesn’t matter if you’re in a different season of life or if you disagree about certain issues or if you don’t see each other for a few months, because your friendship has a way of always picking up where it left off and finding common ground. These are the friends who encourage me to be the best version of myself and I leave their presence feeling inspired. These are the people I want to invest more time in.
There are also those people who are simply draining. Those people that take and take and take. The people who sit and wait for their next turn to talk and never truly listen to what you have to say. The friends who take advantage of your kindness and put you in uncomfortable situations without regard for your feelings. The friends who spend time with you only when it’s convenient for them. The friends who only want the best parts of you and nothing more. The friends where it always feel like work when you hang out and when you come away you feel drained. I’ve decided that life is too short to waste time with people like these.
Today I am thankful for the friends and family
in my life who inspire me.

  1. Oh gosh, thank you for this post! I’ve been struggling with a particular friendship for a few months and debating whether this person really adds to my life or causes too much grief (I’m leaning towards the latter). Life is too short to be surrounded by people who exhaust you…it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who believes this!

  2. i have those friends. the good and the bad ones.

but i have a hard time finding a way to ‘get rid of them’.

should i be up front and honest or just slowly let them fade?

  3. A.men.

  4. They say as you get older the number of friends you have gets smaller; i think what is really happening is we are getting smarter and cutting out the ones that drain us.

  5. I totally went through this mind-life process last year. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones that made me all sentimental and whatnot, but my eyes were opened!:-) It’s all about establishing boundaries, (especially in certain “relationships). xoxo

  6. A few years ago I pretty much lost all my friends. It was kind of awful. But in a way I’m thankful because I realize now that they were so draining. And life is just to short to keep people like that around.

I feel the same way about my ex. I never realize how much of a negative impact he had on me. Our good time started to become farther and farther apart. It was exhausting being with him and going through the day to day.

And yet now here I am, with someone who is so inspiring, someone that makes me feel awesome. It really makes a difference.

  7. I have been thinking a lot about this over the last few months – and this post has helped a lot – thank you!

  9. So true, Lauren! A friend (a good one!) and I were talking about friends that are draining just the other day. It’s incredibly hard to go thru, but I think it’s a part of choosing the kind of person you want to be, and creating a life for yourself that is happy and positive.

  10. You’ll enjoy this message…you’re right on! http://media.willowcreek.org/weekend/wiser-together-2/ Its the one that says Walking with the Wise. 🙂

  11. I think everyone has events which make them realize who their true friends are, who will be there for them when they need it, or who will only be there for you if it’s convienent for them. I full agree with what you said.

  12. YOU INSPIRE ME! 🙂
