the little things we read.

It looks like I’ve got myself a little bookworm. My girl LOVES reading.

We’ve dedicated a bookshelf that is just her height in our living room to all of her books and all day long she brings us books to read. So, I thought I’d share some of the little things we’re reading these days…

1. “Hug” by Jez Alborough

This book was our friend Alomae’s favorite when she was younger and we received specific instructions that it must be read with all the appropriate voices. Well, apparently Fern loves the voices too and this story, while super simple, is very sweet and great for teaching toddler’s about emotions.

 2. “I Can Fly” by Ruth Krauss, illustrated by Mary Blair

This was the very first book I ever bought for Fern, before I even knew I was having a Fern. I just knew I was pregnant and this book was cute. I love the illustrations and basically want to hang them all up in Fern’s room. She loves all the animals in this book. Girl loves her animals.

 3. “Baby’s House” by Gelolo Mchugh, illustrated by Mary Blair

Yet another Mary Blair illustrated masterpiece. I’m kind of obsessed with her illustrations and really want to get the entire treasury. This one is a little more practical for Fern right now though since it’s squishy hard back and not of the more delicate paper paged persuasion.

2. “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr & Eric Carle

A classic children’s book. Great for introducing your little one to colors and the rhymes are fun and catchy – if your child is anything like mine, they’ll want to read it over and over and over again.

5. “Peter Rabbit Sleepy Time” by Beatrix Potter

Fern adores a good “lift-the-flap” book (or as my friend Danni likes to call them: “rip-the-flap” books) and this one is super adorable. On each page you’ll find one of the classic Beatrix Potter character’s (Timmy Willie the kitten is Fern’s favorite) and your child can lift the flap to cover them up for bed time which is a favorite around here. And, for some reason, the placement of the flaps is such that they have yet to get ripped. Knock on wood.

What little things are you reading right now?

  1. Pearl loves Sandra Boynton books. We have like 8 of them. I think they are her favorite because when you read them, you can’t help but kind of sing the words. And they have lots of animals which she also loves.

  2. Ethan loves books, but seems to get bored with them quickly now. We went to the library last week and got 5 board books and we have read every one of them mulitple times a day 🙂 Looks like we need to go exchange for some new books soon! Ethan’s favorites are “The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear”, “Jamberry” and “Goodnight Gorilla” – all have lots of animals and fun things to find on all the pages 🙂 The Duck and Goose books are cute too!

  3. Ah, my favorite topic! We are big fans of Animal 1-2-3 and Flora and the Flamingo.

  4. We JUST got Hug from the library this morning!! It’s super cute. Eddy’s also recently gotten into Little Quack. And of course Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is on heavy rotation.

  5. My 21 month old LOVES “Brown Bear”. I think I have it memorized. 🙂 He also loves Little Blue Truck and How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You. 🙂 I buy him books CONSTANTLY, it’s kind of out of control.

  6. Yay I am so glad she loves book! I pray pray pray that when I have kids I pass on my love of reading to them.

  7. I laughed out loud when I read “rip-the-flap.” So true! We have so many taped Karen Katz books, it’s crazy!
