Maternity Photo Shoot With Coeur de La!

I am so ridiculously lucky to have such talented friends! A couple of weeks ago my friend Caroline and her husband Marc of Coeur de La Photography came up to visit for the weekend and she was sweet enough to take some snaps of me in my current pregnant state.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a huge fan of maternity photography. Usually they’re just kind of cheesy – overly posed, overly cutesy, overly sexy, or overly intimate…in general it’s just too much for my taste. I don’t like showing off my unclothed belly and I don’t like the heart hands over the baby bump and I really don’t like photos of husbands fondling bellies. I don’t know…I’m just weird like that since I’m not much for having my husband touch my belly in general during pregnancy. I also just feel kind of big and gross when I’m pregnant which isn’t something I typically want captured forever. I had a friend take maternity photos of me when I was 37 weeks pregnant with Fern and I felt so gross in them. Totally puffy and unattractive. It doesn’t matter what anyone might have said to convince me otherwise…a pregnant woman feels how she feels. Anyway…all this is to say that I’m pretty particular when it comes to maternity photos.

Caroline understood my vision though and made me feel pretty and did a beautiful job of capturing the spirit of our family and this pregnancy. She pretty much just took candid (or at least semi-candid) snaps of us throughout the weekend doing things we would normally be doing anyway…drinking coffee, reading books with Fern, making pancakes and just lounging around at home…our most favorite place to be. The photos have an intimate feel and just capture what our life is like – even with some of the mess and toys in the background of some photos. I kind of love that because it’s real.

I can’t say enough how thrilled I am to have these photos…even though I may nitpick things about myself like my chubby arms or disappearing jawline, the spirit in these photos makes me see beyond that to the beauty of our life and this little family of mine. Thank you so much Caroline! (P.S. Caroline is based out of San Francisco, but travels here to Portland often, so if you are looking for a wedding/family/maternity/portrait/any! kind of photographer, get in touch. She’s seriously the best!)

  1. oh these are lovely! I love how casual and fresh they feel.

  2. You look absolutely beautiful!

  3. I am totally with you! I think maternity photos always look so cheesy and overdone. These are beautiful though! Very simple and real. I’m pregnant with my second, and I think we might get some family pictures done later on in the pregnancy. I’m hoping that will take some of the awkwardness out and just make them about our family at that particular point in our lives.

  4. I love this pictures! You are beautiful in every single one of them! I especially like the ones with Fern & the ones of you relaxing on the couch. Just beautiful! 🙂

  5. These are so beautiful! She captured real life perfectly. Also I know I’ve probably said this before but your house is so dreamy, I love it!

  6. Beautiful pictures. You look great 🙂

  7. All beautiful photos, but the profile shot on the couch with the coffee = perfection. Love seeing glimpses of your house too 🙂

  8. Just found your blog recently (in the midst of our TTC journey) and really enjoy it. These photos are just lovely -and tastefully done! I love the one with diapered Fern perched on your “bump.”

  9. I feel the same way about maternity photos. BUT my husband actually liked the heart hands thing and was proud of how well he made a heart with his hands. Such a weirdo. 😉

  10. You look great! Lovely family photos. You have great maternity style.

  11. I’m not a fan of maternity shots either – besides my baby shower, I took one bump photo during my first pregnancy, and pretty much none during my second. As I was going through yours I saw a lot of beautiful shots – I specifically love the peeking around the corner, and the just sitting on the couch drinking (that could easily have been me, but with tea). I also loved a lot of the shots with Fern, you’re very lucky to have such a beautiful girl who’s very aware and loving of her baby brother – my son kissed my belly on occasion, but had no idea what was going on – 1000 times worse when she arrived, but that’s a different story.
Gorgeous photos, treasure those moments xxx

  12. I adore these… you look so incredibly happy.

  13. I love these! I never got maternity pictures with my first due to the exact same reasons you listed, so itotally understand how you feel! These are great and so natural, exactly how I picture your family to be!

  14. Looking great Lauren! The picture of you and Fern are so endearing, but I also love the ones of you with your feet up and a mug of coffee – that’s just how pregnancy should look like!

  15. Yes, yes, yes. These are the kind of maternity photos I loooove. I am so not a fan of maternity shoots for the same reasons you listed but these are so natural and sweet. And praise God not a belly “heart hands” in sight, haha. You look so gorgeous 🙂

  16. I think my favorite photos is of Fern kissing your belly! That is too sweet..

  17. Absolutely beautiful photos!! 🙂 you and your family are so precious and The photos with Fern kissing your belly are just adorable!

  18. These are so beautiful. Not cheesy at all. Just very pretty.

  19. You guys are so darling! I love the simplicity captured because this is truly what pregnancy is like not ‘overly’ everything like what you see in styled photo shoots. I’ve never left a comment, but I had to come back and take another look at these 🙂 Can’t wait to see your beautiful growing family when the little guy gets here.

  20. What lovely photos! You’re a beautiful, glowing mama.
