The Little Things We Eat: Oatmeal “Sundaes”

We love hot cereal around these parts, but let’s be honest…the same basic oatmeal can get a little ho hum over time which is why I came up with the idea of having oatmeal “sundaes” for breakfast.

Full disclosure, we actually didn’t use oatmeal…we used Bob’s Red Mill 10 Grain Hot Cereal, but for some reason I just call every hot cereal oatmeal, cause I’m weird like that. This could totally work with any hot cereal you like, but if you’ve never tried Bob’s 10 grain version, I highly recommend it. It’s one of my favorites (along with their Scottish Oats)…and I’m not just saying that because my husband works there!

All the best sundae toppings laid out buffet style…makes it feel more fun (like an ice cream sundae bar) that way!

Our toppings included:

*dark chocolate chips *blueberries *raisins *hazlenuts *raspberries * honey *strawberries *bananas * cinnamon

Piping hot and ready to top!

Fern LOVED getting to choose her own toppings and needless to say it quickly turned into dessert for breakfast with her choices of dark chocolate chips, raisins and bananas. But hey, at least she was getting her grains! I also added flaxseed meal for a little extra nutritional value.

You could always ditch the chocolate chips too. If they hadn’t been there, Fern would’ve been perfectly happy to to choose the other “more virtuous” toppings, but I figured why not live a little? And just in case you were wondering, my favorite combo is dark chocolate chips + hazelnuts. Total dessert breakfast. I have no clue where Fern gets her sweet tooth!

This is a great way to make breakfast feel more fun and still squeeze in nutrition!

What are your favorite oatmeal toppings?

Love and breakfast food,

Lauren

  1. I love this idea. I’m a huge fan of breakfast foods & oatmeal so this might be a little something to try for “Breakfast for Supper” some night. I love it! 🙂

  2. this is the best idea 🙂 i love it.

  3. Looks delicious. Can’t wait to try it out! Love the idea of idea setting a bunch of toppings out like a sundae bar.

  4. I have never seen the 10 grain hot cereal! I am such a huge Bob’s Red Mill fan, so I know it has to be good. The brand is hard to come by where I live, but our local co-op has a decent variety. I’ll have to double check to see if they carry it. If not, online I am going, because this just looks so delicious! Thanks for the recommendation!

    • @JR – I hope you find it! It’s seriously so good. Also, the Scottish Oats…I think those are actually my all-time favorite. They actually competed with it in a porridge contest called “The Golden Spurtle” in Scotland and Bob’s Red Mill’s Scottish Oats won :).

  5. My husband used to go to a camp growing up where there were lots of international campers and they had oatmeal once a week with toppings that people chose from all around the world. Some of the interesting ones were salt, applesauce, butter & milk, and of course raisins and blueberries. I can’t wait to try hazelnuts!
