Finally, A Diaper Bag That Doesn’t Suck

I’m kind of a diaper bag hater.

When I was pregnant with Fern, I searched high and low for a diaper bag that I liked, but never found quite what I was looking for. Let’s be real: most diaper bags are totally heinous. Note to diaper bag designers: just because I have a baby, doesn’t mean I want my diaper bag to look like it belongs to my baby. What’s with all the horrible cutesy prints? But I digress…

I liked the idea of just using a regular purse as a diaper bag, but after ruining two purses with leaking bottles of breast milk and always digging around and never being able to find anything in them I gave up that idea.  In the end I broke down and bought a cheap-o diaper bag for about $30 that I hated until the day the strap broke 6 months later. And now you know the backstory of why I hate diaper bags.

This time around I knew I wanted something different. A diaper bag with style and function, so when Lily Jade offered to send me one of their diaper bags I was excited, but still a little skeptical that it would live up to the hype.

I chose the Madeline bag in brandy and I’ve been smitten since the day it arrived.

My favorite part of this bag is the fact that it can be converted in three ways so I can carry it on my shoulder, cross body, or as a backpack. I never would’ve purchased a backpack style diaper bag before, but now I can’t believe I went so long without one. A backpack is brilliant for running around after a little one!

Aside from the cool conversion options, the leather is amazing and all of those pockets…swoon! I can fit so much stuff in there and I love that the inner “baby bag” can be easily removed so I can take out all the kid stuff easily and just use it as a purse when I’m going out on child-free excursions. Basically it’s the most perfect mom bag of all time.

I’m officially a diaper bag convert.

{Bag: Madeline in Brandy c/o Lily Jade}

I already practiced putting in Baby Brother and Fern’s belongings together and there was plenty of room. I can’t wait to put it to good use for both of them once he arrives! You can see all of my bag’s contents and tips and tricks for packing a diaper bag for two over at Disney Baby here.

Love, Lauren

P.S. This bag is on major sale right now if you order between now and mid-May since it’s backordered, so if you’re considering a purchase, you should check it out!

  1. Okay, that is a GREAT diaper bag! Love that it doesn’t look remotely like a diaper bag and that you can take the insert out and just use it as an everyday bag. I really, really, really like it!

Our diaper bag was gifted to us from PB Kids and I do like it too. It’s gray and white and looks more like a canvas tote and not too baby-ish. But this bag you’ve got here is definitely top notch!

  2. I don’t have a baby and I kind of want one of these (maybe it’s all the pockets??) also, you look mega cute in these pics Lauren – I love you in glasses!

    • @Sam – Thanks lady! I can only wear them for short periods of time, because they’re only for reading and even then I just BARELY need them. I love glasses though, so it makes me feel legit to wear them :). And seriously…this bag is perfect…baby or not I would totally rock it.

  3. Okay i am so jealous of this bag. It is gorgeous and I love that it has the backpack option too! I have yet to master the art of packing a bag for two and my littlest is almost two months already.

  4. I hated diaper bags too but I received a Coach baby bag as a very generous gift before my daughter was born. I love it! Now that she’s in school I still use it as a laptop bag. The best thing is after two years it still looks brand new. That says a lot for a baby bag.

  5. I just ordered mine and can’t wait. I, too, have a newborn and a toddler and loved your tips, thanks!

  6. I love this diaperbag, why is it most diaper bags are pink or blue, or with some crazy print? I was lucky to find a great beige one, that I liked, and quite a few times I got comments about it not looking like a diaper bag.

  7. Whitney says:

Are the straps comfortable? Or are they too thin and rub? Thanks!

  8. I have a girl baby & she is now almost 1 & half . We are used same types of Diaper bags to maintain her goods.

    Anyway thanks for nice sharing.

  9. I have been eyeing these bags for a couple weeks now. Everything I have ever wanted in a diaper bag/purse. My only other thing on my checklist is how stiff is it when it’s not completely full? I hate bags that collapse and you’re left digging into a world unknown of “purse junk”!

  10. Love the bag! On a side note….where did you get those shoes!? Here I am thinking to myself, “I can’t afford to purchase a new bag on top of everything else I need for the new baby….but those shoes! I need them. Hey, I’m growing a second child, I deserve a treat, right? Yes! Ask her where she got the shoes! Just do it, Becca.” So here I am 😉

    • @Becca – Haha! I love it! A girl really can never have too many shoes. Unfortunately…the shoes were purchased a few years back at Target…and in the little girl’s section of all places! They are ridiculously comfortable and they were on super clearance! You actually just reminded me that I need to peruse the girl’s section again soon…I wear a 7.5, but sometimes the girl’s shoes will fit!

Thanks for the great review! I’m trying to figure out how red-brown the “brandy” color is – do you mind saying which of the photos is closest to the true color of the bag?

  12. You’re so cute 🙂 I have a question about the bag! I got one! But mine doesn’t seem to look as soft or distressed . Super sad about it. Did you treat yours?? Any help would be awesome.

    • @Abby – Oh no! Sorry yours wasn’t the color you had expected. I didn’t pre-treat mine. It definitely has developed a slightly more distressed look over time, but it was always super soft and these photos were taken right after I got the bag, so I would assume it would look the same. This is the Madeline in brandy. Is that the color you got?

  13. Great diaper bag and the best part is that it does not look like a diaper bag.

  14. Do you think a MacBook would fit in this bag even while using the baby bag insert? That’s why I’m wanting to buy it for!
    Thanks in advance

  15. Ugh beyond jealous I’m having my second girl and I’m so tired of the cartoon diaper bags ! But this is beyond what I can afford looks so beautiful congrats on the little one ❤️ They’re a blessing

    • Astrid – Thanks mama! Keep looking around…there are definitely some cute options out there at around half this price point, though I do love my Lily Jade. Check out Little Unicorn! xo

  16. I’ve been looking at this bag for a while 🙂 Do you feel like the shoulder straps are long enough…as in, you don’t need to bend your arm all funky to get it up and over onto your shoulder?? Does that make sense? Thanks 🙂
