Here Comes the Sun

The sun has begun to shine in Portland and it’s pretty much the best thing ever. Even though I’m feeling massively pregnant (21 days left until my due date!) and I dread wearing shorts, I still love this sunny weather – especially because it means having fun outdoor adventures with my girl. Toddlers really are so much fun!

I won’t give you any illusions that two-year-olds are without their challenges, but I have to say that overall I’m loving this stage. Fern is so inquisitive about everything! She wants to know what things are and why they’re that way and when something out of the ordinary happens her favorite phrase is, “What’s that about?!” It makes me laugh every time. Granted she’s super into running off when we’re out places lately and lumbering after a speedy toddler whilst 9 months pregnant isn’t exactly my idea of a good time. She’s learning though and I’m trying to practice patience.

We’ve been laying low around here, but with this weather we can’t help but take advantage and get outside…even if it is just in our front yard. Fern loves being outside, so she doesn’t discriminate as to wear we spend our outdoor time as long as she gets it. Here are a few of my favorite sunny day photos as of late…

This outfit is maybe my new favorite thanks to the hat from the dollar bins at Target. Fern usually isn’t much for hats, but she loved this one and even put it on of her own volition! Also: that curl!

The other night while we were playing in the living room, Fern looked at me and said, “Mama, I know what we should do! Let’s ride the skateboard – that would be a good idea!” She then proceeded to tell me it was in the closet. Apparently she’d spied it there at some point. I didn’t even realize she knew what a skateboard was, but apparently I was wrong. Her Daddy was happy to oblige her request with a spin down our street. It was so cute how focused she was and her balance was actually pretty impressive!

Despite all the greenery in our backyard forest, there isn’t much in the way of grass. Grass is hard to grow in the shade and it’s a bit unruly back there anyway, so we hang out in the front yard a lot. Front yard picnics have kind of been our jam lately.

I couldn’t figure out how to work the sprinklers last night, but it was no matter. We brought out big tubs of water instead and Fern splashed and poured happily for a solid hour or more until she was shivering from being cold. Even then it was hard to pry her away. We also had popsicles, which in case you can’t tell from the photo she totally hated.

Has the sun showed up yet where you live? How have you been spending your sunny days?

Love and sunshine,
