Thoughts on 30

Today is my 30th birthday…a day I’d been dreading for years. For some reason I always just thought of 30 as being officially “old” and who wants to be old, right?

But, now that 30 is here…I feel OK, because the accumulation of these past three decades is something I feel pretty proud of.

Over the course of 30 years I went to college and graduated (…with a degree in Human Development and Family Sciences in case you were curious). Even though I didn’t get a job directly in my field of study, I found a career I love as a writer and sometimes-stylist. This job helps to pay the bills, gives me a creative outlet and is responsible for numerous friendships. It’s a pretty great gig. On top of this, it let’s me be home with my kids.

And speaking of kids…ummmm…I’m a freaking mom! That’s a pretty fantastic accomplishment for 30 years of life. Fern Winter and Clive Clarke…I’m pretty sure you two will be my greatest contributions to society in my lifetime.

Oh…and I have a handsome husband who I’ve dated for 12 years and we still like each other, so there’s that.

My forehead may have some ever-deepening lines, my boobs may be less perky and my hair may have errant grays, but you know what? I’m OK with it. I’m infinitely more comfortable in my own skin than I was a decade ago at 20 and I’m happy. I have everything I need. Sure I still have goals and hopes and dreams, but right now I’m exactly where I want to be and confident that my 30’s are going to be great.

Love and gray hair,

Lauren

  1. Those are quite the accomplishments in 30 years – far more than me! I hope you have a wonderful birthday celebrating with your family.

  2. Happy Birthday! I personally love getting older and feel so much more comfortable, but then again I’m one of those people who was pretty much born 45. You should be proud of all your accomplishments including two beautiful children! I hope you celebrated with some cake 😉

  3. I love this! I was pretty freaked out when I was about to turn 30 but it’s not that bad. I’m actually enjoying what I’ve accomplished in my 33 years on this planet & you, my friend, have done some great work in your 30 years! Happy birthday! 🙂
