Average Mom Style: Elevated Basics

As a busy mom I don’t get very fancy when it comes to my wardrobe these days, which is why I rarely do outfit posts anymore. Compared to all the legit “I wear a well-thought-out outfit every single day and document it” style bloggers out there, I feel like my ensembles aren’t particularly interesting. That said, I always get requests from mamas to share my outfits, so I’m going to make more of an effort to do it from time-to-time for a couple of reasons: 1) I have a very average body. At 5’5″ and 147 lbs. I feel like I have a body that a lot of moms can relate to and I feel like as inspiring as those “real” style bloggers are a lot of them aren’t dressing bodies that the average mama can relate to. I can fill that void. 2) I don’t spend a ton on clothes. Yes I do like buying clothes, but I don’t like spending a fortune. Sometimes there are some more pricey pieces like this necklace that I wear practically everyday, but for the most part I shop at places that are accessible 3) My outfits are practical for mom life. Most – if not all – of my outfits are easily washable for when your kids wipe their sticky peanut butter hands or a snotty nose on me. They are the kind of outfits you can play at the park in and still go out for a casual date in. And most of them are nursing friendly. Also, my photos are almost always taken with my iPhone in my own yard on my way out the door to the grocery store, because who has time for styled shoots for myself? Hopefully you won’t hold that against me! And there you have it…cause average moms need style too.

I tend to stick to black, white, grey and denim when it come to my closet, because 1) it’s flattering and 2) it’s easy. I can mix and match pretty much everything in my closet which is really convenient when I don’t really have time to put a lot of time into getting dressed (i.e. almost always). BUT…just because I wear mostly neutrals, doesn’t mean it has to be boring. I love the idea of knowing what works for you and what you love in terms of basics and then finding simple ways to tweak those things to elevate them and make them more interesting. This outfit is a good example of what I like to think of as elevated basics. Jeans + top is a super easy outfit, but when you choose items that have special subtle details it can totally bring the whole outfit up a notch. This top from Loft is that. Chambray basic, elevated with and unexpected shape, a pocket and fun button details in back. Also, the shoes. They’re total basics, but they’re not just utilitarian. I can play at the park in them, but they’re still pretty with delicate details like an ankle strap. It’s the little things my friends.
