Portland Places: Sea Level Bakery + Coffee

One of my favorite things about our Mother’s Day beach trip was our stop at Sea Level Bakery & Coffee. I do realize that this particular spot is NOT in Portland, but Cannon Beach isn’t super far away and Oregonians love a good day trip, so I thought it was OK to include it. I could change the name of the series to “Oregon Places”, but I love me some alliteration, so “Portland Places” it is. But I digress…let’s get back to Sea Level…

Some friends told us about Sea Level and we were excited to try it, because coastal coffee is notoriously awful. Granted, we are pretty spoiled with good coffee here in Portland, but Portland standards aside, it’s usually pretty bad. We almost always go to Cannon Beach when we beach it up, for the sole reason that they have the best coffee and food options. Insomnia is usually our go-to for beach coffee and it’s really great, but I think Sea Level just may have replaced it as my new favorite. Sea Level uses Stumptown beans, which usually doesn’t particularly thrill me, but it was really delicious. I had a latte and it was on-point.

But, even without the coffee, there were plenty of things to love about this cute little spot. I was smitten with the branding and the space itself is light, bright and airy, but without feeling too stark. It’s apparent that the space and interiors were given much consideration, but not in that trying-too-hard type of way.

AND…the baked goods! Oh my…the baked goods. They were out-of-this-world fantastic. We tried the macadamia/coconut banana bread, bourbon caramel sticky bun and blueberry rosemary scone and each one was delicious in its own rite. The flavors were interesting and well-balanced. Next time I’ll be trying their bread, but one can only consume so many carbs in a single sitting.

So basically if you ever find yourself in Cannon Beach, Oregon you should definitely make a pit stop at Sea Level. Because, it is all things lovely and delicious. You’re welcome in advance.

  1. Thanks for sharing this! We’re headed up your way in a couple of weeks, and I’m adding this to the list of must-dos. Anything else you’d recommend along the coast?

    • @Emily – We usually go to Mo’s, because clam chowder is kind of nostalgic. We went to The Lumberyard for lunch and while it was good, it’s a bit pricey for pub food. Also, I feel like coastal restaurants have a different standard than Portland restaurants. Haha! This trip we mostly just drank coffee and hung at the beach though :).

  2. what a great shop! Always looking for good coffee near the beach 🙂

  3. Oh my…I think I want to go there RIGHT NOW! I need to pack my bags & get on a plane! 🙂
