Love Can Change the World

When we think about Valentine’s Day, we tend to think about love from the perspective of romance. We think of romantic, candle lit dinners…cupid…pretty jewelry…boxes of chocolates…you know the drill. But love is so much more than all of those things and it is at the heart of what Sudara does.

Sudara is a company that was started in 2006 by a woman who had a desire to show love to the unseen women of India. After a trip to India in 2005, Sudara founder Shannon Keith was blown away by what she saw happening to the women and girls there. She learned about the stories of young girls being sold into sex trade and women being forced to work in sex trade simply because they had no other real options to help their families survive. After this trip, Shannon knew that she had to do something about this tragedy, so she created Sudara.

Sudara makes clothing goods that are “made from hope, and made for comfort”. Their line of comfy PUNJAMMIES for men, women and children has created jobs in India for women as a means for them to get out of sex trade. Safe, sustainable jobs are the key to changing the lives of these Indian women. Love really can change the world.

I learned about Sudara recently when they asked if they could send Fern and I our own PUNJAMMIES so we could share their story with my readers and I was excited to do it, because I believe that they are doing such a wonderful thing for women. Fern was super excited about her pajama pants and I was about mine, but even more so it was a great opportunity to share the story of where her pajamas came from. I was able to tell her that they came from a place called India. I was able to tell her that these pants were created by women who didn’t have safe jobs, but that now that they are able to make these pants they can make money to buy food and clothes and necessities for their families. We were able to have a conversation about how much we have and how not everyone in the world has as many advantages as we do. We also talked a little bit about how the places we choose to spend our money can make a difference – I’m not totally sure she understood that part, but it was nice to be able to start the conversation.

If you’re looking for a new way to share some love this V-Day, perhaps you’ll give Sudara jammies some thought!

Thanks for letting us share a little bit of love (and our early morning crazy hair!) with you.
