my favorite thing about today #15

My favorite thing about today was a girl date with my lovely friends Jamie and Ashley.
Our first stop was the DIY fair my church put on.
We do this thing called Advent Conspiracy (along with a ton of other churches around the world) and the basic idea is to spend less, give more. The DIY fair was a place where people could get ideas for homemade gifts for Christmas. I am actually not a big fan of Christmas. I actually get pretty grinchy about it, because I hate all the commercialism, but last year Craig and I handmade most of our gifts which made Christmas so much better for me.
Anyway….we got a ton of ideas and made these super cool brooches.
the spread.
my finished brooch.
James modeling her pretty peach brooch. She said she has to dress cute now when we hang out in case I blog about it :). Mission accomplished.

lovely girls.

*Brooch making instructions @ the end of this post!
We worked up an appetite DIY’ing it up, so we let my Urban Spoon iPhone app choose our eatery (so spontaneous of us!) and ended up at Zell’s Cafe. It was so quaint inside, although I forgot to take pictures of our food because I was too hungry.

Our final destination was to good ‘ole Forever 21 on a jewelry hunt. I got a few pairs of earrings and two more slouchy hats….white and grey. A girl can never have too many accessories :). We had such a lovely day.

I heart these girls!

P.S. Here are those brooch making instructions….super easy and way cuter than my amateur photos express.
Flower Brooches/Hair Clips

You’ll need: *lighter *satin (or some other synthetic fabric)
*thread *beads
*brooch pin or bobby pin (to make hair clip instead)

1. Cut fabric into circles (they don’t have to be perfect…I think they look cooler when they’re uneven). Start with a circle the size you want the brooch to be and make the inner circles progressively smaller until you have the desired amount.

2. Using the lighter singe the edges of each fabric circle. This will make the fabric curl up slightly.

3. Stack the singed circles in the way you’d like them to look and sew the beads onto the middle of the flower, going all the way through the fabric layers as you do so to make the layers stay together. Add as many or as few beads as you want.

4. Once the layers of the flower are sewn together, flip it over and sew the brooch pin or hair pin (you can put both on if you’d like to have a brooch/hair clip in one) to the flower.
It’s super easy I promise…sorry if my instructions suck though. A technical writer I am not. If it’s confusing let me know and I can try to clarify for you.

  1. It looks like you had a wonderful day together. I think it is wonderful when God blesses us with good friends. The brooches were cute, your friends and you even cuter. I have to agree with you about Christmas, the commercialism and all.I really liked your homemade things last Christmas.Thanks.

  2. cute brooches! i have to say i love love love christmas! i just love the music, the tree, lights and the anticipation to see my entire family since we don’t get many times that we can all be with each other.

  3. that looks like such a fun day! i think it is cool that your church does that. so awesome. sean i were having a conversation today about brooches. one night, when we were engaged, i was telling him that i bought one at an antique store and wanted to wear it on our wedding day. it was late..and instead of saying it how you are supposed to? like “broches” i said it like ” broooches” he will never let me live it down.
anyway, you are too cute and i wish we could be real life friends and go shop together and make cute things 🙂

  4. ha! brooooooches! that’s funny. if we were real life friends we could shop together, make cute things and get into all kinds of shenanigans. it would be awesome. too bad you live in utah :(.
