products i like.

I love fashion.
I love clothes.
I love accessories.
This is not a surprise.

I love styling outfits.  So….why is it that I can’t seem to get the hang of styling my hair?  Or doing my makeup?  I’ve just always sucked at it.

Even though I don’t like hair or makeup I am a total sucker for beauty products.  Give me a gimmick and some pretty packaging and I’m sold.  Embarrassing but true.  The only problem is that most of these products end up collecting dust on my bathroom shelves.  There are a few that make it into the regular rotation, but they definitely have to prove themselves first.

Here are a few of my favorite products…
the ones I use like they’re about to be discontinued.

{hippy dippy body wash.}
The smell of patchouli in this body wash gets me in touch with my inner granola crunching hippy.  It almost makes me want to bust out some Birkenstocks and long flowy dresses.  Almost.  But seriously…this stuff smells amazing.

{apricot scrubbiness.}

On the rare occasion that I actually do wash my face I use this stuff.  It smells like a cross between crayons and apricot, but it does the job.  It actually makes my pores look slightly smaller right after washing.  Obviously it’s nothing permanent, but still cool to see smaller pores even just for a short bit.

{the hair magic brigade.}

I only figured out how to tame my curls in the last couple of years.  I use these 3 products right after showering (at night) in order to achieve non-crazy curliness, and I use them in the order shown (from left to right).  After I dump these miracle workers on my mop top I vow not to touch my hair ’til morning and let it air dry.  Sometimes I still have crazy hair, but most times this combo does the trick.

{fat lash maker.}

This picture was too bright so you can’t tell, but this is Cover Girl’s Lash Blast.  It’s awesome.  My all time favorite mascara is Dior Show, but since I’m not willing to drop $26… or whatever the going rate is….for a tube of mascara, I’ll go with this – both favorite.

{red lips for the non-commital.}

First….ignore my crappy chipped nails.  Now moving on… If you like the idea of red lips, but are a little scared to take the plunge, then this lipstick is for you.  It’s actually a tint.  It’s Smashbox’s Tinted Lip Treatment in Solar.  This was my first foray into red lips, and it’s perfect for everyday wear and not too intense for day time.

{minty lip shine.}

C.O. Bigelow’s Lip gloss in Magenta Mint from Bath & Bodyworks.  Minty flavor + pretty color.  ‘Nuff said.
{pretty shiny magic maker.}

*I forgot to include this product earlier, but I’m seriously in-love with it.  The packaging is sort of awkward looking, but let’s just look past that.  I smooth it on my hair to make it shiny and pretty and less frizzy.  It also smells like gummi bears.  What could be better?

What are some of your
“can’t live without” products?

Real life testimonials are always the best way to avoid wasting money on crappy beauty products, so please share!

Happy Thursday!

  1. anastasia eyebrow kit. jane iredale everything. laura mercier tinted moiturizer. chapstick brand chapstick (spearmint is my FAV). any kerastase hair products and dove bar soap. i love posts like these! being a girl is so fun sometimes.

  2. AHHHH. GIRL. my dove facial lotion is being discontinued!! and i’m acting like it’s the end of the world. it’s pretty depressing.

  3. i am a product junky myself. first of all, i have never seen the Olay body wash…patchouli? i am IN. buying it today. what couldn’t i live without? Pureology for my hair, it’s totally dry without it. OPI nail polish, my new fav shade…Jade is the new black. omg. 3 things from LUSH- Snow Fairy shower gel, Candy Fluff dusting powder and this hand lotion that i got that is in the shape of a heart and it is solid, you rub it on instead of squeezing. amazing. makeup- Bad Gal Lash by benefit, Hoola bronzer by benefit. love. and coconut lip gloss by philosophy. i am totoally in the market for my first red lipstick! i looked and it looks like Smashbox doesn’t make that shade of red anymore. any other suggestions????

  4. Ah! Its okay
    I’m a TOTAL sucker for hair products (anything to keep my ringlets ringlety) and facial cleansers.

    I’m in love with Bior face toner (i can feel my pores shrinking whether thats good or bad I’m not sure… plus it makes my face super smooth!)

    Bior Moisturizer (… Or maybe this does?)

    For hair products I’m in looooove with ’07 ringlet… something. It sounds heavy duty. But it works wonders, though warning. You must use in small amounts.

    … okay I really just like morning beauty routines, rather then what I use.

    🙂

  5. I use the same mascara – LOVE.

    I stand by my Redken moisturizing shampoo and conditioner – it’s perfect for my dry hair! I am also in love with my new Jason organic vanilla lotion!

  6. What a fun post! It’s great to get to know your ” beauty product taste.” I totally feel you on the whole buy tons of products and then let them collect dust. I have a whole shelf and box full of them. Great post idea, maybe I’ll have to do somthing like this too.

  7. I’ll admit that the only real beauty product I use is the shower gel. I decided to go “water only” for my hair about a year ago and I’m quite glad I did… it’s amazing what kind of awesome hair I can have while spending nada on it. Then I also don’t use all those face cleanser/moisturisers/etc., I just use olive oil.

    It’s so great for travelling too, I only need my contacts, deodorant and chapstick with me 😀

  8. Well i suffer from oily skin & spots so I love Clearasil – it’s great for oily skin and takes away my spots. I started the face wash on Sunday and my skin’s looking waaay better already! one thing I wouldn’t recommend are the Deep Pore Treatment pads, they sting your face like crazy, i think i’m allergic to them though so I had to stop using them.

    to get rid of blackheads, steaming is good – put a towel over your head and put your face over a bowl of hot water to trap all the hot air in, and maybe put a few drops of essential oils in the water. this makes your pores stretch, so gently squeeze out the blackhead and it just drops out. only works with really big ones though.
    sorry for grossing you out xD
    xx

  9. I can’t live without Dior Show! It’s so expensive but I try to limit my use haha. That’s really the only make up I wear. I’m so bad at being a girl.

    Oh & sometimes I use Bumble & Bumble Smoothing Creme on my hair before I go to sleep (after a shower) to tame my curls. It works really well when it’s not humid outside.

  10. I love my frizz ease serum/creme thingy Can’t live without it actually.

    I love the idea of the tint, I’ve always wanted to try red lips, apparently I’ve got the colouring for it, but I have to say I’m a little apprehensive! Will have a look out for it!

  11. This is great, I was thinking of doing a post like this earlier in the week!
    I actually use the fructis sleek & shine when I want to straighten my hair. But my go to for calming my curls is ghd’s sea spray, I get it at Sephora so it’s a bit pricey but it actually works and I’ve been using it for a couple of years. (Usually my hair gets used to whatever curling product I’ve been using within a couple of months and won’t curl any more).
    Have a great Thursday darling!
    xo

  12. i loooove that burt’s bees peach and willowbark face scrub. i don’t know how many of those i go through in a year, but it’s a lot. That and body shop’s tea tree oil face wash, smells soooo good.
    you should try Too Faced Lash Injection mascara, it’s sweeeet, i use it everyday and like you, i’m not a hair and makeup kind of gal. i still don’t know how to do my own hair to make it nice and pretty like most girls, it’s just too long.

  13. you’re too funny. i suck at hair & makeup too & it makes me mad. I do what i can…it looks ok…i occasionally get compliments on my eye shadow – but it’s all just a coincidence.

    i use that sleek n shine stuff too. Love it.

  14. I am in love with Cetaphil–it works great and its cheap. I also adore MAC lipstick and lip gloss–its pricey, but it lasts a while, oh and body butter from the Body Shop–smells so good!

  15. Oo i love it… I suck at it too but I do wish I can do it well.

  16. hi! for some reason my computer has been having problems showing pictures on some blogs, so i can’t see the one that shows what you use to tame your curls. but i’m always looking for curly hair products! what do you use? and in what order? thanks!

  17. I’m going to have to try that body wash. I have recently been really into earthy scents. The Mint gloss is a life saver! I can’t believe I have gone so long without buying a new one myself.

  18. I’m really bad at Hair and Makeup as well, I wish I was good at it, but luckily I have friends that are is a occasion arises that my so called “I don’t give a care rockstar look” look won’t work for me.

    I am a nail polish girl, I paint my nails. I love it. I am also a Perfume girl, guys tend to not remember that sparkly eye shadow you might of put on but they do remember the way you smell.

  19. John Frieda works wonders on my hair. 🙂 I wish I could wake up with perfect hair and makeup and all…no more buying hair products and facial stuff…but oh well, I guess this is never gonna become reality. 😉

    Have a great day Lauren.

  20. I have been using the same Maybelline mascara in the pink tube for FOREVER. Every now and again I try to switch up but I never love anything more than that.

  21. i use some of these! i use the same lip gloss from bath and body works, and i have used the same mascara too! i rarely wash my face..boo..haha. but i have bought this facewipes from target that i used every single morning because they wake me up and leave my skin feeling so soft. and i hate having to wash my face at a sink. they are like $3 and are in a purple package…

    i used a target brand mousturizer with spf..and i used to use bare minerals make up..but i got tired of spending so much money..so i bought the maybelline..or is it covergirl? mineral make up and it works just as good!

    i used to use Suave on my hair..but my hair stylist told me that anything is better than suave, so i just bought Tresse me (not sure how to spell that ) this weekend and i am LOVING it. i then use biosilk drops after i wash my hair and i like to do it at night too and sleep on it!

    love this post! sometimes it sure is fun to be a girl..other times..not so much!

  22. I used to be soo in love with that after party stuff back in my beauty school days!! Thanks for reminding me about it!!

  23. My perfumes! I gotta wear them every day. 🙂

  24. ohhhh i like this post! haha i always read sutff like this and think “ok, ill drive to the grocery store and buy it all bc it obviously works” haha, let’s see, my die hard products are baby oil for shaving, biolage shampoo, garnier smooth serum, omg smells like fruity heaven, and any opi nail polish. reds/purples/pinks.. im sold. xo pretty lady!

  25. Lauren! So, I was wondering..would you dare show pictures of your hair when you wake up after putting the product on? Because I would really like to know how to tame my hair after taking night showers!

  26. I am like you. I love clothes but I didn’t really get the hang of make-up until the last couple of years. I’m still getting the hang of my hair. It’s curly and frizzy and messy. For work I blow it straight. I use an anti-friz product by Aveda, which I love. I’m still working on the curly look.

    For make up I love so many things. I have way too much of it, especially eye make up. But here are my favorites.

    Este lauder, Double wear powder- this is great because it’s lighter than foundation but has great coverage. This along with concealer is fine.

    Clinique, soft pressed powder blush, honey blush

    cover girl lash blast and liquid eye liner

    For eye shadow I swear by sonia kashuk (for eye brushes too)

    Cinique long lash gloss wear, sunset-this is a great everyday lip gloss

    L’Oreal paris, colour riche lip gloss, soft wine

    Lip stick, sonia kashuk, sheer orchird

    I am definately going to try the smashbox tinted lip. I love red lipstick for going out but i’m afraid to wear it during the day. Great tip!

  27. ill send you some after party! im not going to carry it at the salon anymore!:( sad bc the packaging is so cute. whats your address???
    i love keihls everything. our bathroom is overloaded with it.
    i love my mop and aquage shampooos.
    aquage sea salt spray, osis dust it, my orange lipstick, my mint rose lip balm…
    kiss my face patchuli body wash. obsessed with.

    i used to use that mint lipgloss there. the clear one. i loved it…thanks for reminding me about it:)
    love you!
    Brandi

  28. i love soap and glory’s body scrub. they promise to soften any ashiness away 😉 lol i love all of their products really– the pink packaging and the cheeky phrases.

    i wasn’t a fan of the stiletto mascara, but i love it after using another mascara (sounds like overload but i need the extra help ha)

    i love any of the chi stuff for your hair. I currently am using the conditioner. Love it! esp. cos i use my chi iron so much.

    thanks for the tips on products! 🙂 i STILL need to get the dry conditioner hair stuff!

  29. I have just learned in the last few years how to tame my curls as well. I use 1- biosilk stuff for after the shower, you put it in damp hair and it protects your hair if you’re going to use heat, but it also controls curls really well, even if you aren’t using heat, and I also use the green sunsilk stuff for after the shower. I am with same as you though, you put stuff in your curls and then you can’t touch it basically, heaven forbid brush it. I have a question though, I have such a hard time with showering at night and having curly hair, because it looks like a bomb went off in my hair in the morning and I have to re-wet it to get it to calm down, so what do you do to keep your hair from doing that in the morning?

  30. i’m like you in that i’m not so big into make-up. however, i am very diligent with face washing and only use neutrogena. i love it. and for shower/lotion (since i live in a dry state) i use johnson’s baby wash and baby lotion. it smells so good and makes my skin baby soft.

  31. I love all this stuff…I did a post of my favs not too long ago. Check it out : ) http://tinyurl.com/yg638el

  32. I LOVE that mascara, I cant use any other. I dont do makeup so well so a little of that and some lipglass from MAC. im a pretty lady.

  33. I love the C.O Bigelow lip balms and I’ve never tried that red lipstick but now I want to! I suck at my hair too 🙁

  34. oooh i’m so with you on the patchouli! i loves that stuff. and the c.o. bigelow gloss.

    the patchouli made me think of this exfoliator scrub that i used to use from Sabon- it’s vanilla lavender patchouli = heaven in a jar. ohhh it’s the best. alas, my student income does not allow for it anymore 🙁

  35. So fun to hear about all your picks! Lately, I’m loving Moroccan hair oil. It smells so good!

  36. i am the exact same way as you!
    i need to like to a class or view some tutorials or something to figure out how to beautify myself properly. haha.
    lash blast is my favorite. i need a new tube…thanks for the reminder. 🙂

  37. i’m the same way! my hair is uncontrollable and my makeup skills are pretty low!

    i love the apricot scrub! best feeling after washing with it! and clinique dramatically different moisturizer and maybeline great lash (you know the pink and green tube?!) are my faves!
