only part of my weekend was fun.

Only part of my weekend was fun….
because I was sick for a lot of it.

And now for some TMI….I puked for the first time since I got my wisdom teeth pulled my sophomore year in college….about six years ago (*this was because Lauren and Vicodin don’t mix).  I was so upset.  I cried.

I hate being sick, and when I am I turn into a big baby.  I’ve never thrown up without having either my mom or Craig there to hold back my hair.  I ended up getting sick after Craig had left for work, so I had to puke by myself.  It kind of made me feel like a grown-up…but not in a good way.  It just made me sad.  Especially the part where I got puke in my hair :(.  So gross.

Thankfully we now have a TV in our bedroom, so I stayed in bed literally ALL day long.  The only time I got up was to get a banana because I remembered that when you’re sick you should follow the B.R.A.T. diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast) and since I was feeling too sick to make rice or toast and didn’t have any applesauce, a banana was the food of choice.  Also, my mom was super sweet and brought me a Jamba Juice.  So this is what a lot of my weekend looked like:

I was watching “16 and Pregnant“.  I cried watching this one girl and her boyfriend give up their baby for adoption.  I blame my emotional outburst on being sick.  That show is a train wreck I just can’t stop watching.

Oh…and can I just say that since being married I’ve learned that my husband is not a nurturer when I’m sick.  In his family you kind of just stay away from the sick person until they get better.  In my family my mom always doted on us and made sure we were 100% comfortable at all times.  Hence the disconnect.  Did any of you experience something similar when you got married?

Anyway….after spending like 36 hours straight in bed I started to feel better and started getting a little stir crazy.  I was still pretty weak, but I got out of bed and went to the shop with Craig where he worked on the G-Wagen.  I brought my laptop and hung out with Marley while he  worked.

The highlight of the weekend was finally feeling better and getting to eat real food (not just bananas and toast!) with our friends Andy and Elisha.

Andy and Elisha know good food, so it’s always fun to have a meal with them.  The funny thing is….in the years we’ve been friends we’ve only gone out to eat twice…this was the second time.  They are both great cooks, and Craig and I can definitely hold our own as well, so we usually just cook for each other, but this was a fun change.

Pok Pok for dinner.  My favorite.  If you are ever in Portland, you MUST come here.  I’ve already blogged about it before, but it’s just that awesome that I will continue to mention it until everyone’s tried it.  The most flavorful food I’ve ever had.  We had frog legs and curried crab straight out of the shell…both of which none of us had ever had before, so that was fun.  But we were all wondering…..who ever decided that crab is a food suitable for fine dining?  Definitely messy!

Then we indulged….apparently I was making up for lost time over the rest of the weekend.  We went to Papa Haydn for dessert.  You must also come here if you’re ever in Portland…. they have real food too, but the desserts are legendary.

Glad to finally be feeling better and glad I squeezed a bit of fun into my weekend.

How was your weekend?
Did you do anything fun?
Do tell!

Happy Monday!

  1. Glad your entire weekend wasn’t just being sick!! That dessert looks delish!! My weekend was pretty low key. I mostly relaxed and ate-what’s better then that!?! ha ha! Have a good week!

  2. Hey thanks for your comment. I decided to put your button up on my blog because it’s so cute. Can’t resist doilies!

  3. frog legs? how was it? never tried that before haha.. but crab sounds really good. and Portland someday I will be there haha especially the desserts! 🙂

  4. I hope you are all better now, the act of puking is one of the most disgusting feelings ever. *shudder*

The dessert looks delicious, I love dessert! Especially anything with freshly whipped cream.

I did nothing special for the weekend, I got my stuff ready for university. 😀 Thanks for the comment!

  5. i’m so sorry you were sick 🙁 I’ve had a terrible cold for over 2 weeks, so i know how you feel. but good job taking care of yourself! it sucks when no one’s there to coddle you, but it means you can be self-sufficient too! 🙂

  6. glad you are feeling better!!
i am the opposite in the momma/kid sick dept. my mom took care of us but the policy in our house was “if you sick you stay in bed & we don’t want to see you”. this meant no tv. trust me it sucked. and she was never a big babier.
now when i don’t feel good i just want everyone to leave me alone.

  7. I’m glad you feel better
    (:

and mannnn, that dessert looks so yummmm
    (: (:

  8. Glad you’re feeling better 🙂

  9. I totally just saw Pok Pok on the Food Network’s “Diner’s Drive-in’s an Dives.”

    The host raved about it.

I called my parents who live in Vancouver and told them to go try it!

    Glad you are feeling better!

  10. glad to hear you’re feeling better!

  11. Jus & I are the exact same way about being sick! If I get sick I’m used to getting nurtured and he just leaves me alone and then I start getting whiney and he still leaves me alone!
I’m glad you’re feeling better. Have a happy Monday!
    xo

  12. Mmmmmmmm…Papa Hadyn. You are definitely feeling better!

  13. Sorry you were sick! That sucks you had to puke by yourself. I don’t think I’ve ever had to do that either. I’m glad you are better now though and that you made the best of your weekend!

    xoxo,
    Cat

  14. girl, i know what you mean. my husband likes to be nurtured, he doesn’t nurture. whenever he was sick growing up his momma spoiled him, while when i was growing up we were left to ourselves, so he just wants to be nurtured, but if I’m sick, I’m on my own. Funny how that turned around like that! haha. im glad you’re feeling better.

  15. glad you’re feeling better…being sick is no fun. i had kind of a lazy weekend…shopping and hanging out…

  16. Good to hear you were sick and got to have a semi-good weekend anyway! I got sooo sick from the Vicodin when I got my wisdom teeth out too, it was awful!

  17. i am so glad that you are feeling better! that is not fun to be sick..and i have never heard of eating BRAT foods before! that is good to know though 🙂 easy to remember so i will do that from now on 🙂 that 16 and pregnant show gets me too! awww.. so sad.

i love that picture of Marley in the shop. she is so cute. and i want to try those places! i think i might be scared to try frog legs though.. interesting..

anyway, glad your mom took care of you! and i am glad that you are feeling better! love you girl! hope that you have a fantastic day!!

  18. those desserts look sooo good. jealous!

sorry about your being sick. 🙁
    that’s so sucky.
my mom always held my hair back, too.
and one time my best friend carrie did when i threw up before the school play.
but with josh i’m a leeettle embarrassed to ask for help. ha.

josh is pretty much a nurturer, and i’m the same way.
so i’m pretty glad about that!

    xo.

  19. Oh Lauren… sorry to ear you were so sick! And amazed you haven’t puked in 6 yrs!? Wow! I get it about Craig too. i didn’t come from a nurturing family so my hubs is actually OK when it comes to taking care of me when I’m sick – but yeah – I do tend to get left alone in the room too. and NO Kisses b/c I’m all germ-y or something. Sad right? Hope you’re feeling better babe!

    xx Vivian @ http://diamondsandtulle.blogspot.com

  20. So glad you’re feeling better girl. Being sick sucks. Hope I find a husband that takes care of me when I’m sick. 😉 haha! 😀

    Have a fantastic Monday. xoxo

  21. Well I’m glad your entire weekend wasn’t ruined. I’ve been sick too so I spent all yesterday hanging out on the couch with a book and the TV on. While Dustin went to a friend’s to watch hockey. Lame!

  22. Glad you’re feeling better! Although after reading this post now it’s 10:15, two hours until lunch, and I’m starving! So thanks for that. 😉 That dessert looks delish!

  23. im glad you’re feeling better! you had FROGS LEGS after having a vomit-fest? talk about BRAVE!!! i don’t think i could eat those things while being fully well, but the plate DID look good 🙂

love the picture of marley. cute CUTE!!!

  24. MMM Papa Haydn is my favorite! It’s been too long since I’ve been there. Race and I went like a year ago and decided we’d try the “dessert sampler” which was a horrible decision! It was tiny.. like a bite of 5 different desserts and more money! I was pouting and annoyed so when I was in the bathroom he ordered my favorite (the raspberry chocolate one) and then I was very happy! How were frog legs? I don’t know about that.. glar you’re feeling better and I’m excited to see you next weekend!

  25. engagement story posted! 🙂

  26. boo being sick! it looks like it was pretty fun otherwise! and leila and vicodin equal barf too so i know how you feel! so terrible!

  27. lauren, i am so glad you are feeling better! i hate puking, luckily andy is very good at taking care of me when i am sick… i am glad that your weekend turned out nicely!

    p.s. marley is soooooooo cute!

  28. I was sick this weekend, too…and I turn into a big baby when I’m sick, as well. Even though I’m technically an adult and live on my own, my Mom always stops by to bring me applesauce, saltines and ginger ale when I’m sick. I definitely grew up being nurtured when sick, just like you. lol.

  29. LOVE Papa Haydn’s! I’ve never been to Pok Pok, but we’re always looking for good new restaurants to try!

Sorry you were so sick! The worst I’ve ever been sick was last year, when I got food poisoning. I threw up 13 times in four hours, and then had to go to the ER to get an IV drip because I was so dehydrated. No bueno.

  30. Oo, I hate throwing up too. Sorry you were sick!

  31. Glad you are feeling better! I’m with you, I turn into a total baby when I get sick and need tending too as my mom did for us. My husband has been pretty good so far when I’ve been sick, brings me whatever I need. But I still call my mom and she makes all it better!

  32. being sick is awful! I’m glad you’re better now. My family was the same way..always doting when we were sick.

Glad you had some fun in the end though! That dessert looks amazing!

  33. I hope your feeling better! I was pretty much addicted to 16 and pregnant that couple that gave up their kid is so precious! You should watch teenage mom too! 🙂

  34. so glad you’re feeling better!

  35. I’m glad you are feeling better! I haven’t puked since I was 8… that is almost 15 years. It is my biggest fear and I’m so sorry you had to go through it, alone. I would have cried too!

At least the rest of your weekend sounded fun!

  36. oh! good to know! is it Thai or something? is it all spicy?
i sent you an email asking for some recommendations as to where to eat when visiting Portland, and bars to go to, and places to go!
glad you’re feeling a bit better!

  37. Awh, so sorry that you were sick; Recently Justin and I both has strep throat and a stomach flu [perks of working in a hospital- i bring home all the fun germs]..I ended up puking, but realising I had to puke way to late & puked all over my feet and on the ground; cleaning up your own puke- makes you feels grown up & not in a good way. I seriously tried to bargain my life away to Justin if he would please clean it up, it was not going to happen though. 🙁
I am so glad that you were able to go out and have a good time though once you were feeling better. :]

  38. Lauren,

you should take a darkroom class with me this spring at PCC. I have taken it a few times already and it basically gives you free reign over the darkroom in the evenings! The teacher is chill and in a nutshell…it’s rad! think about it!

you have so many follers now I need to make sure you remember me! 🙂

  39. i *hate* to puke…it is the *worst* feeling in the world. blech! and my beau is the same way…when i am sick, he just stays away til i am better. sometimes he almost seems “mad” at me for being germy! lol

hope you are feeling better 🙂

  40. Lauren… the last time I puked maybe too much info but oh well was when got my wisdom teeth out.. and I waited to get them out big mistake getting them out at 24 BAD BAD idea. Any who hope you are feeling better lady!! Sending you much much love! xo

  41. Sorry you were sick all weekend, but I’m glad you’re feeling better. It turns out I’ve been cursed with the swine flu!

Anyway, it isn’t funny that you were sick, but I did have to laugh while I was reading this post. I’m such a baby when I’m sick and I cry at everything. I have no idea why, so I can understand your outburst at the 16 and Pregnant show. I also watched that over the weekend (I haven’t left the sofa since Friday afternoon).

Also, it was kind of funny when you said that Craig avoids you when you’re sick. Chris is the same. He’s not helpful at all, and he even had the nerve to tell me on Friday that I didn’t sound all that sick. I can’t help but feel like karma came to get him last night when he started getting sick…even though he doesn’t really sound like it 🙂

  42. I get sucked into 16 and Pregnant!! So glad you’re feeling better. I am such a baby too, it’s ok! That choc cake looks sooooooo good-thats the PMS talking! Hope you’re having a good Monday love!

  43. That dessert bar looks soooooo good! I always have a major sweet tooth, so I would love it there!

  44. glad you are feeling better! my fiance’s brother lives in Portland… i’ve never been, but i’ll have to make a list of “all the things you have to do in portland” from your blog when we do go visit!! haha.

  45. I”m so glad you are feeling better. I’ve always wanted to go to Portland (I love Seattle) and I can’t wait to try all these yummy food places!

    x, ash

  46. mmm..that dessert.. 🙂

  47. The dessert looks yummy!

  48. I’ll bet that delicious looking dessert was what made you feel better 🙂

  49. Glad to hear you are better…I LOVE 16 and pregnant!!!

  50. 🙁 I can’t stand puking. I haven’t thrown up since I was a sophomore in high school (also wisdom teeth removal) – that’s nearly 9 years ago. Ugh.

And I sort of had the same thing when we got married – my mom was always the nurturer, brought us soup, held our hair when we puked, etc. etc. My hubby just wants to be left alone. We’re still figuring all that out (after 2 1/2 years of being married…) Luckily neither of us gets sick very often.

  51. i love papa haydn! when i first moved out here 8 years ago, my then bf and i ate there like every week (of course, i had to up my gym time! ha ha). have you guys been to pix? they have good stuff, too! good friends and good food sometimes does the trick when you’re not feeling better. oh, my family is nurturing around sick people, i’m not, so i’m not sure what happened to me! LOL i’m like craig, i stay away! 🙂

  52. Glad to hear you’re feeling better! I hate being sick and I learned after moving in with my boyfriend that he is OVERLY concerned when I am sick – to the point that I can’t sleep because I can feel him coming in to check on me every 5 minutes.

    Poor boyfriends/husbands… they don’t have a clue.

  53. aww i’m such a baby when i’m sick too! i was kinda sick last week and my roommate pantsed me and i cried. like cried. oh such a baby

  54. I am glad that you felt nurtured, and that I made you and your brother feel 100% comfortable when you were sick. It makes my heart happy to know that you think that I have been a pretty good momma. I love to dote on you whenever I am given the chance. Thanks for helping me feel needed. Glad that you are feeling better.:)

  55. im sorry you were sickie. its no fun but im glad you got to be with your friends and eat yummmmmy food. i want desert really bad right now!
    xo
    when we talking next!
    b

  56. that stinks about feeling crappy! glad you seem to be feeling better though!
my boyfriend is the same way as your hubby when it comes to me being sick. it took a long time for me to get use to it since my family and i are very much about nurturing and baby each other when we dont feel well. its still weird when im sick and instead of him bringing my soup he kinda just high-tails it until i get better. lol
    -kellie

  57. Looks like you had a nice end to the weekend! 16 and Pregnant is a really addicting show as well as the series that is the spin-off, Teen Mom. I think I missed last week’s new 16 and Pregnant.

My weekend was so-so. Went to visit a cousin in the hospital, but by the end of the weekend…did some shopping, online and at the actual store. 😀 Also, had to order a bridesmaids dress for one of the weddings I am in this year.

    Glad you are feeling better!

  58. Awe I hate when that happens but I’m glad you are feeling better and where able to get something in, the weekends are TOO short if you ask me lol But Love the pictures, they are great! Have a good week 🙂

  59. i wish I could lay in bed all weekend drinking jamba juice every weekend! (of course without the being sick thing!) Hope you are feeling better.

  60. Mmmm. I LOVE Papa Haydn’s. Love love love. I’m just over here drinking my carrot juice with my lunch feeling jealous in more ways than one.

  61. Looks like we had a similar weekend. I kept saying all weekend, why don’t we have cable in the bedroom. Seriously, we should. So I had to lay on the couch and watch 16 and pregnant.

  62. Glad you are feeling better! In regards to the sick thing it was the opposite situation for me. In my family we stay away from each other but my husband is very comforting when I’m sick. Its nice, but something to get used to.

  63. We had a blast hanging out and kept telling ourselves over the drive home at nearly midnight [crazy!], “We should hang out with them more!”

BTW, you shouldn’t lie in your blog – there’s only one good cook in our little family (and it’s not me!)

  64. Oh my goodness someone with the same sickness issue! My boyfriends family practically quarantines the sick person whereas my family is not that way at all. It makes me more sick when I am alone I think, he has actually changed his ways over the past few months if one of us gets sick and he even gives me forehead kisses now if I don’t feel well! Major progress.
