rubbing elbows with rockstars.

Instead of talking about my entire weekend in one post, I’m just going to focus on the Camera Obscura concert and then talk about the rest of my weekend later because there was far too much going on to cover in just one post…..

oh…but first….the winner to the Allium earrings giveaway is:

NOW….back to the concert…..

The concert was fun, but the getting there part maybe not quite as much.  I had Friday off and met up with my friend Jamie around 12:30 to head out.  We stopped for coffee and while we were there I dropped a couple of things out of my wallet (including paychecks) when I went to pay.  Jamie picked them up and handed them to me but I must’ve set them on the counter while paying and ended up leaving them there.  Our destination was about 2’ish hours away, and about 40 minutes in I got a call from Craig wondering why he’d gotten a phone call to come pick up our checks from the coffee shop….. ooops.  It wouldn’t have been a big deal, except the other thing that had fallen out of my wallet was my concert ticket.  So….we had to drive back 40 minutes to go pick up my ticket and it was a good thing because once we turned around Jamie realized she’d forgotten hers as well.  She tried to call her husband to find it so he could meet us part way and we wouldn’t have to go back to her house too, but I think we all know that husbands aren’t always the greatest at finding things, thus we had to go back to her house too.  An hour and a half later we were back on track.  There were other little glitches thrown into the trip throughout the day, but I honestly can’t remember what they all were, but it was one of those things where we were just laughing so hard at how ridiculous the situation was because so many little things were going wrong.

Finally we made it to Eugene and had dinner at P.F. Changs.  Lettuce wraps, crab wonton deliciousness and ginger ale.  Yum!

After dinner we wandered around Eugene looking for the hotel where we were supposed to meet up with the other girls we were going to the concert with.  By the time we found the place we only had about five minutes to get ready.  I hadn’t really decided ahead of time what I was going to wear, so I’m not really sure I liked the outcome and my bangs were going crazy so I tried to pin them back, but even that looked terrible.  Cest la vie.  Here are mine and Jamie’s respective concert outfits:

This was actually the first concert I’d ever been to where there wasn’t a mosh pit or general jumping around involved, so I wasn’t quite sure what to do.  I quickly learned that the white kid indie dance is where it’s at.  This dance basically entails moving only your upper body and arms while maintaining little to know foot movement.  Sometimes you can close your eyes too if you’re super into the music.  BUT….never…..and I repeat NEVER are you allowed to smile.  Something else I learned while attending the concert is that proper show attire should probably be something super 80’s inspired or just a concert tee and jeans….but most definitely NOT a concert tee of the band who’s actually on stage.  Good to know for future reference.

Once I learned the white kid indie dance I felt prepared to enjoy the show properly – front and center :).  The concert was incredible and my favorite part was the fact that the songs actually sounded like their album.  I hate when bands try to get all “reinventing the wheel” at a concert.  If I wanted to hear sweet acoustic remixes I’d watch MTV Unplugged.  I came to your show because I like what I heard on your album, so why would I want to hear something that sounds completely different?  Nice work Camera Obscura on keeping it real.

{Tracyanne and her beautiful voice.}
{Carey getting serious during the encore “Razzle Dazzle Rose”.}

{Ooop.  Ironing out last minute kinks like having the wrong set list.}

{Trumpeter Tim busting out his skills.}

After the show we waited around to meet the band.  I had sent them a tweet (p.s.  feel free to follow my tweets….I’m way better at responding to tweets than comments!) to see if they ever meet fans.  My friend Elysse and two of her friends (the girls we met up with) are pretty much the biggest Camera Obscura fans ever – so much so that they had just driven from L.A. to see them in San Francisco twice and then gone on to Eugene to see them a third time.  Despite seeing numerous Camera Obscura shows they’d never actually worked up the courage to meet the band, so meeting them became my goal – I thought it would be really fun for them.  The band responded to my tweet saying that they try to come out and meet people usually after the shows.

We waited for about 20 minutes and finally figured they weren’t coming back, but then as we walked outside we saw them walking out of their tour bus, so I went up and said hello and we chatted for a bit.  I asked how Coachella was and Traceyann (the lead singer) said it was great and that she was super excited to have seen Danny DeVito there.  She said he was “so li’ul” in her lovely Scottish accent.  We got autographs and photos and they were very sweet to oblige us.
{Jamie and I with the band.}
{Elysse and Jorina get autographs.}
{Hard core fans.}
It was a lot of fun and makes me want to go to more shows now.  I think this may possibly start a trend :).

Hope you all had a great weekend!

I’ll be telling about the rest of
mine tomorrow most likely.

    i got really into camera obscura when i was younger, but then just quit listening. who knows why!
    now i’m certain i need to get back into their music.

    ohhh, the white kid indie dance…yes.
    i learned of these moves last summer.
    i didn’t partake in them, but i now do them alone in my room and car.
    🙂

  13. Glad you had a great time. And you enjoyed the concert.

  14. Aww, that looks like such a fun weekend! I have to check out more music from this band– I know a handful of songs that I really like, but I keep forgetting to listen to more of their stuff!

    I had a little misadventure with a concert last weekend, as well, so it’s funny and reassuring to know that I am not the only one who flies by the seat of my pants half the time =P

    PF Chang’s is my FAVORITE restaurant. My heart hurts to know that now that I have moved to Louisiana, I can only eat there when I go home to Pennsylvania to visit. Sadness!

  15. I am SOOooooo jealous! What a perfect day. I’m glad you had so much fun.

  16. fun! and hilarious – especially the white kid indie dance, that is so right on! I’m going to have to check the band out, too. They sound great. hopefully see you tonight!

  19. Oh I love lettuce wraps!!! And, you look gorgeous!!! Lauren, great photos I feel like I was right there watching. Much love to you! xo

  20. That’s so awesome you got to meet them, I’m always too shy to meet the band at gigs, though I did see the guy with glasses from Green Hornes/Raconteurs (I forget which) and started chatting with him. He was actually pretty cool.

    I’m always too worried about looking like a crazed fan though so tend to just ignore famous people!

  21. Sounds like such an amazing concert!

  22. ahhhh… how jealous am i!!??!
    i love p.f. changs and I LOVE CAMERA OBSCURA!!!
    look at your getting pictures with the band!
