pretty things for a good cause.

Today I am both honored and excited to share a very special organization with you that gives hope and life to women in Uganda.  The organization is called 31 Bits.

Here is a run-down on
who 31 Bits is and what they do:

“31 Bits is an organization working with women in Northern Uganda who were displaced by the war and have been living in poverty.  We buy their jewelry (made with beads from recycled paper) at fair trade prices on a monthly basis and provide them with opportunities for literacy education, finance training, and business training.  We currently have 60 women in our program, who are now able to send their kids to school, feed their families, and provide health care.  31 Bits has joined a movement of businesses that are out to transform the lives of both the producer and consumer. 31 Bit’s vision is to empower women to become independent and successful.”

This small, grass roots company is based in Costa Mesa, California and was started in 2008 by five college students from SoCal traveled to Uganda and met six amazing Ugandan women.  These students saw the need for change – the women needed the income to provide for the basic needs of their families.  These women had tried selling their handmade jewelry, but found that there wasn’t much of a market for it in Uganda.  These college girls knew they could help these women provide a better life for their families by providing a market for their jewelry and thus 31 Bits was born.  (To learn even more about the company read this article or watch this video…please watch the video if you have time).

Not only is 31 Bits empowering women, but they are also bringing beautiful jewelry to the world and the trend is catching like wildfire.  They’ve been recently written about in multiple publications including FOAM surf magazine and in People magazine’s Style Watch for the sandal they collaborated on with Reef (it’s called the “Ugandal”).  Soon they will also be launching their “Elasticity Campaign” (this month) with Tenley Molzahn from the TV show “The Bachelorette”.

Aren’t the “Ugandals” so cute?
And the jewelry too!

If you have time you should definitely read more about this wonderful organization by checking out their site 31bits.com or by following them on facebook or twitter.  OR…. even better yet, buy something pretty for yourself from their site!  I’m going to be choosing a little something for myself….I just have to narrow it down first :).  Also feel free to blog about 31 Bits to spread the word!

Let’s all help change the world one necklace at a time :).

Hope you have a lovely day!
