happy 21st birthday in dog years.

Today Marley is turning 21….
in dog years.

In real years she’s 3.

I can’t believe how much she’s grown since we first got her!

Before we got Marley I was definitely not a dog person, but now I’m so glad to have her in our lives.  She makes us real happy.

To celebrate Marley’s birthday, she wanted (OK…I maybe bribed her with treats) to show you a video of some of her doggy tricks.  Sometimes I think I don’t ever want kids, because Marley is about as smart as a toddler already.  Haha!

Here are her basic tricks:

But this one is my favorite:

Craig taught her this trick, because he got sick of waiting outside in the cold while she did her business every night before bed.  We just open the front door and let her out and tell her to “get some” (that’s her ridiculous code for “go potty” that Craig came up with when she was a puppy.  He was just joking, but it obviously stuck).  Then we shut the door without latching it and when she’s done doing her thing she comes back in and shuts the door and then lays on her bed so her feet can dry and she doesn’t track wet paw prints all over the house.  It’s a trick bred from pure laziness, and it’s awesome :).

Happy Birthday Marley dog!

  1. This is absolutely precious! I love how she closes the door.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARLEY!!!

  2. It’s just awesome!
I wish my ferret could do this!
So far my ferret Stitch can only do two tricks… Licking my hand to say “thank you” and walking on two legs…

  3. You should post a tutorial on how you taught her the door trick lol, that one’s priceless!

  4. Look at that jump action! What a good girl.

  5. happy birthday Marley! xo

  6. Happy Birthday Marley!!!! 🙂 Just too cute!

  7. Yay happy birthday Marley!!

  8. Wow, that last trick is like the best trick ever. I really need to teach my dog hobie how to do that.

  9. Marley is beautiful!!! And that is such an awesome trick!!! We just got a german shepherd puppy, and though I love him to death, he is super annoying with all the crazy biting. haha. obedience school, here we come. 😀

  10. oh my gosh this is so cute! i love the tricks your adorable pup can do! happy 3rd birthday to her! have a great thursday! xo

  11. Such a sweet post! Puppy children are the best. 🙂 And I adore the “get some” trick; Marley is one smart girl!

  12. hahah I love it! We had German Sheps too and they are ridiculously smart!

  13. Oh how fun!!!! I used to have dogs when I was younger, and I’m hoping to get one again soon. 🙂 Pets are awesome.

  14. Happy happy birthday Marley! Her tricks are amazing! Maybe she can blow out some birthday candles too?:-) xoxo

  15. Happy birthday to your puppy dog. Ours will be having his 21st birthday bash in may. All the tricks we have taught our pup have been for fun, but now that we are moving into a house we are going to have to train him to go potty without being on a “walk” Ugh.

  16. I’m SO jealous your dog can close the door!!

  17. your dog is awesome! i love german shepherds!

  18. Those are the best tricks ever!!!! I feel like I need to teach Onyx to spin now 🙂 My favorite trick of Onyx’s is that if I point at Josh and say “kisses” he’ll go over and kiss Josh on the face!

  19. Happy birthday to Marley!!! Look at her bag of tricks!!! Verrrry impressive. 🙂 That door shutting business is pretty dang good…and I love puppy hugs. My dog, Millie gives really sweet hugs too. She puts her front paws on your shoulders and then rests her head on your shoulder and buries her nose in your neck. I die every time! She’s going to be TEN this upcoming month. I can’t believe it.

p.s. Marley as a puppy is super duper cute. I wish I would’ve known both our dogs as puppies – we both adopted them as adults.

  20. So cute! I miss my Marley! Happy Birthday puppy :D.

  21. Marley is AMAZING! Happy Birthday to the wonder-dog! I’ve never known such a well behaved puppy, and since the Mister and I have been talking more and more about getting a dog when we buy a house I think German Shepherd just climbed to the top of the list! I’m just blown away by what a good and clever dog Marley is!

    p.s. “Get Some” is hilarious!

And They Lived Happily Ever After…

  22. i am IN LOVE with this post!!! Marley is soooo adorable!

  23. This is so cool!
I love smart, well-trained dogs. They are so cute and amazing.
But dogs that aren’t trained TOTALLY annoy me.
    Marley is cute! Happy Birthday!

  24. Happy Birthday, Marley! Such great tricks!

  25. Wow! You have one smart dog. She seems like a really cool dog to have around. I bet you couldn’t even imagine your life without her now!

  26. Happy birthday marley! I LOVE those tricks. This is amazing, you taught her how to shut the front door! I totally need to do that when I have a dog.

  27. Happy Birthday to Marley!

Hah – Her “shut the door trick” is even better than our “hit the lights” trick 🙂
    Dogs are the best!

  28. Happy birthday to my most favorite and the best dog EVER!!! I wish I were half as cool as Marley…I love her and her door-closing ways so much! Seriously amazing!

PS: I think I’m going to have to sign up for twitter just so I can get in contact with Lucys…bah!

  29. Happy Birthday Marley…you and Rowdy share a Bday and should definitely play someday soon. xo

  31. I love that last trick! My dog Syd can open doors, but not on command…just when she wants to escape. She also isn’t kind enough to close it behind her.

  32. oh my goodness MARLEY!!!..God bless her! happy birthday baby girl..i can’t believe how high she jumps! lol..your videos really made me smile 🙂 i’m so glad she turned you into a dog person (i loove animals)!..now following, maybe you can stop by mine also? if u like it i hope you can follow. i just started and i’d really appreciate the support 🙂 give marley a biiig hug for me, thank you!

  33. Sweet Marley!!! Happy Birthday!!! 🙂

  34. OH this is so special! I love that you shared these photos. thank you sooo much! made my day.

  35. Hahaha that trick with closing the door is awesome!! The Chilean dog we inherited from the last missionaries just learned how to push open a door with her nose (yes, she couldn’t even open one WITHOUT a latch)…We’ve also had to teach her English..but that’s another story!

Anyway, super cute dog, super cute tricks!

  36. HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARLEY!!!!
    xo!

  37. happy birthday marley! 🙂 awe, she is so cute! & the “shut the door” trick is definitely awesome! 🙂

  43. Belated Happy Birthday Marley!!! 🙂

  44. I love this! Thank you for sharing.

  45. Yay! Marley! He’s only gotten cuter 🙂

  46. That trick is ahhh-mazing. I wish I could pull that one off! Unfortunately, mine would have to put her leash on, walk herself down the street, and then come back, open the storm door, then the regular door & close them both, haha. Not likely. 🙂

  47. I had a German Shepphard and she was the smartest dog I have ever met. I wish I had thought to teach her to close the door because I know she would have been able to do it. Very cool, thanks for sharing!
