strange produce.

This weekend I went to the
Portland Farmer’s Market with my friend Liz

We saw lots of lovely produce

and flowers

….and I came home with some
baked goods, cheese, kale rabi and a rosemary plant.

But….they all paled in comparison to the Jerusalem Artichoke.

I am not a vegetable person.

I’ll eat them, but let’s be honest, if it weren’t for the health benefits I could go the rest of my life without eating another spear of asparagus and shed no tears about it.  BUT, after trying the Jerusalem Artichoke my mind was changed.  These are delicious!  The adorable couple who were running the stand said that they are great in stir fry, but I loved them raw.  They kind of reminded me of jicama.  BUT….later I did find out that they do have some anti-social side effects.  Here is what the writer John Goodyer wrote about the Jerusalem Artichoke in 1621:

…in my judgement, which way soever they be dressed and eaten they stir up and cause a filthy loathsome stinking wind with the body, thereby causing the belly to be much pained and tormented…. more fit for swine, than men.

So apparently I’ll be eating them in moderation :).

Did you make any interesting discoveries this weekend?

i bought the first bear´s garlic of the season at our local framer´s market on saturday and it was delicious! 🙂

  4. i can’t wait til the weather cracks here for fun springtime events! until then, my weekends are filled with thrifting with the husband, cooking yummy things and relaxing!

  5. I went on a little road trip to Savannah, GA and discovered some fantastic cupcakes 🙂

  6. i think rainbow chard is really pretty, but i’ve never actually eaten it, i’ve only gotten it for flojo.

i actually do like veggies, but i can be a little picky about how they’re cooked. but i’ll admit, i hate beans. i don’t care what kind of bean it is, lima or kidney, i don’t like it. the only exception is if it’s covered and white cheese and served with my mexican food, then i’ll eat it!

glad you had a good weekend! love you!

  7. beautiful images!

  8. I like SOME veggies but I’m really picky about which ones. And I tend to like my vegetables raw. They’re just better than way!

  9. I wish we had a farmers market that is as good as that one! I love asparagus but have never had a jerusalem artichoke, I’ll have to keep a look out!

  10. i love your side effects bit. hilarious.

hooray for the markets being open, and praying that the we hit the 60 degree mark this week. heaven knows i need a little sunshine.

  11. So did they cause a filthy loathsome stinking wind within your body? I wanted to try them before I read that, so I must know! Yay I love the FM…lets go next week(while the boys play with Chris’ present)! It’s supposed to be super nice this weekend!!!

  12. That produce looks amazing! I love veggies but somehow I’ve never tried a Jerusalem artichoke. I’ll have to grab some next time I see them, of course when I don’t have any house guests or social events planned! Thanks for the warning! =)

One of my nearest and dearest friends runs a CSA in Portland and I think they have a regular booth at that farmer’s market! If you ever spot Singer Hill Gardens, they’re my buddies! I wish Arizona wasn’t so far from Portland or you’d definitely see me at that farmer’s market every week! It looks incredible! =)

And They Lived Happily Ever After…

  13. Such a beautiful day! Hmmm, that artichoke sounds interesting:-) I guess all the best food things in life like to pack a punch! xoxo

  14. I feel yuh on vegetables, but we gotta eat them! haha 🙂

    <3 artichokes

  15. I love when I connect the dots between different blogs I love. I think I first clicked on yours on “From Portland to Peonies'” blog, then randomly clicked on your link from Urban Weeds which I’ve followed for awhile, then realized you are friends with Becca (life @ 1521) who I know from church! Such a small world Portland is 🙂 Cute blog!

  16. haha, this is awesome. I’ve never heard of a jerusalem artichoke. It looks kind of like ginger. I wish farmers markets were open here, but it’s still too cold. All of those veggies look so yummy!

  17. I’m *trying* to become more of a vegetable person. I’m like you in that way — I like fruits ten times more!

  18. ha, I’ve seen the Jerusalem Artichoke but never had a clue what it was! Thanks for the info and the warning 😉

  19. I bought produce at Safeway yesterday and now I just want to get rid of all of it. It’s just not as pretty! There are farmers markets on the east side, but none very close to us.

  20. Now that the weather is nice enough (usually), you may be bumping into me at the farmers market!

  21. i’ll keep my eyes out for the jerusalem artichokes!

i did the “cupping” or coffee education/tasting at the Annex @ Stumptown on Belmont and 34th. So interesting. Definitely a free fun mid day activity if you haven’t already done it.

  22. I’ve never had that type of artichoke, but it sounds delicious!

  23. I discovered that I may be allergic to wheat. Not the kind of discovery you had, but it’s food related. 🙂

I can’t wait until the Farmer’s Markets opens up here.

  24. 1- I miss Portland. 2- I love new produce adventures and Farmer’s Market shopping. Ours are pretty seasonal except for a couple scattered throughout our area.
