manly men.

I like my men manly.

This is not to say that I don’t appreciate Craig’s sensitive side.  I love that he can cook up a mean stir fry and his cinnamon rolls put my baking to shame.  He also can tailor his own clothes and once in high school he sewed me a purse out of old jeans (it was awesome by the way).  He even leaves me sweet little notes in the morning sometimes.  BUT….I really like his “manly skills”.

He can fix cars, build me tables and beds, go off-roading like a pro, cut tile to make us new countertops, roast his own coffee beans, drive a motorcycle, play/watch basically all sports, make a mean drink and about a bajillion other things. He’s just basically good at most everything – he would never say this, but it’s totally true.

Even though Craig’s got lots of “manly skills”, I still think he could learn some things from this website:  The Art of Manliness.  It’s all about reviving the lost art of manliness (…obviously).  Actually, I really want to just read it myself.  It’s so cool!

Here are a couple of my favorite articles:

All men should have skills.
At least in my personal opinion :).

I think I just might buy this book – a lot of these “manly skills” are ones I want to have myself – ha!

What skills does your man (or dream man
have that make you swoon?

  1. Hi! First time here. Like your blogg alot and will read more later!
    //Pilla from Sweden

  2. I gave my husband that book last Christmas. It’s so great and the website is awesome.

  3. I love manly men also! I grew up with my father, grandfather, and stepfather who did all (and still do all) of the hammering, building, fixing, bug-killing, heavy lifting, and all other manly chores, and would hope that my future mate would be the same way. If he’s able to cook, that’s a huge plus 🙂

  4. I need to check out that website! Looks really fun. I’ve always adored how the men in my life (my dad and fiance) are strong, can assist with any hands-on task, and aren’t afraid to get dirty. I’m really tall, so I need a big bear to make me feel safe ☺

  5. How fun!!
I’m glad MJ has a sensitive side but also manly skills. I like the way he is.
    He totally completes me. 🙂

  6. I like John’s bike riding skills and numchuck skills.

  7. Wow! sounds like craig is quite the catch!!! 🙂 I love that andy has so many things he does that are both manly and sensitive. he is an excellent cook and makes the best chicken dinner (think thanksgiving dinner, but with chicken instead) and he is master of fire. we heat with a wood stove, but even before that, he could ALWAYS get a great fire going whether it was in a fireplace, fire pit or camping! there are so many other great things about him, but i will stick with those two for the moment!
    happy easter, lauren!

  8. i completely agree haha now where are these men that posess all these qualities? they seem to be hiding!

  9. Hahaha this is SO AWESOME! I can’t wait to check out that website. And I completely agree. I like balanced men who are aware of my feelings and who care about people and have compassion. But that doesn’t mean you have to be any less manly as a result. I love that my man is masculine!

  10. Well… I bet Dustin can make a mean snow fort!

  11. that’s hilarious. I think my dream man would definitely know how to start a cozy fireplace fire and massage my feet. However, I think I would settle for the massage.

  12. Seriously? Is Craig real? You have to be making him up. I’m sure you realize how lucky you are!

  13. Like you, I have a Renaissance man at home – he cooks, paints, and is a musician. But his manly skills are ones that I love – like building our deck & pergola, completely re-doing our backyard, fixing my car, coaching football (my favorite manly side of him) & how he bows up when people over step their bounds with me…so cute!

  14. Im so excited about this book! Awesome post, thanks for sharing. LOVE IT. also, really random, but i read before in one of your blogs i think that you love chevron pattern…and i saw this necklace…and it is pretty sute, for cheap! thought you might enjoy. http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=FOREVER21&category%5Fname=acc%5Fnecklace&product%5Fid=1062098001&Page=all&pgcount=25

  15. Oh me I love my manly man. He does yardwork, fixes the car, builds me things and loves to fish & hunt.

So freakin hilarious! I think I need to buy my hubs that book for Fathers day!

  16. Hahaha that’s hilarious… because falconry is SO important! lol I love the how to take someone to safety… I think heroism is a sexy quality in a dream man…

    Just a Silhouette

  17. I LOVE THIS. And agree completely. My fav men are kind of lumberjack’y. My man’s gotta kill spiders and not laugh at me when I call him in hysterics b/c a spider the side of a half dollar (I wish I was joking) has made a web across the width of my balcony, and now I can’t go outside.

  18. An introduction to falconry? I guess manliness has changed a bit over the years.
I like that my husband can construct just about anything, and can grill a mean burger. I should get him this book. He would love it and his birthday is coming up!

  19. My man, your father, is an amazing manly man. He and Craig are the most amazing handymen that I know. I love that he can fix anything he puts his mind to. I love that he is also sensitive too, when he fixes my broken heart when I am sad,and how he covers me up with the blankets when they fall off me, or when i just need a blanket to get warm. I really love when he kills spiders for me, although he doesn’t always like to.

  20. I’ve never heard of this before. This sounds awesome! I’m totally turning my husband onto this website. Maybe he’ll take up some new extracurricular activities to help with his med school apps.

  21. love your blog, just found it thru fromportlandtopeonies, will be back!

  22. three cheers for chest hair and building stuff!

  23. I like that my boy looks out for me and looks after me and instead of getting exasperated when I’m all girly he thinks it’s cute. I also spent last weekend with a screwdriver and a hammer helping redecorate his house (and getting covered in paint) so I wonder if I meet the necessary girly-girl requirements for my manly-man…

  24. Hi Lauren! I love your blog and am a pretty new follower. My roommate’s boyfriend loves the Art of Manliness blog and shared it with my boyfriend who now also loves it!

  25. On the way to the coast in bad, wet weather and we spun out on the road. Andy pulled out these Fast and Furious moves and I remember thinking, among the flashbacks of my life, “where did he learn it?” I’ve always been so proud of that moment!

  26. I LOVE this! My husband is disgustingly good at everything, too. I’m am decidedly un-crafty. If I’m reading a book on embroidery or jewelry-making, I ask him to read it first and show me how to do stuff. He always gets everything right away; I can never decipher the instructions! -Colleen

  27. that website is just too funny

  28. I dig the basic knife skills.

I like manly men but I love my hubby because he is so into fashion and is my at-home stylist. Without him, I would leave the house looking like a grandma. It would be nice if he could kill spiders, fix the leaking toilet and paint and put up wallpaper. Oh well…

  29. Everyone should have excellent falconry skills. Not just for men anymore!
