today i am missing….

Today I am missing….
COFFEE.
I know that technically I can have a little bit while pregnant, but I’ve decided to wait until a little later in my pregnancy to indulge in it…just to be safe.
BUT….while we were visiting Caroline and Marc this weekend we stopped and got coffee at Barefoot Coffee where I had the most delicious non-coffee drink ever.  It’s called “The Voodoo” and it’s a combination of dark chocolate, coconut and ice.  The not-so-overly sweet flavor, was the closest to capturing the flavor notes found in some espressos.  It was amazing.  We tried to go back to get another one bright and early on Sunday morning before we headed back home to Portland, but it was 6:00 a.m. and they didn’t open ’til 7:00.  Sad.  Too bad Barefoot Coffee isn’t in Portland.  I’ll be looking to find something comparable around here now, because the blended drink I ended up settling for at Peet’s hours later was basically a glorified chocolate milkshake.  Although, I will say that I did enjoy having an excuse to drink a chocolate milkshake for breakfast :).
Anybody know of any good coffee drink substitutes?
And I’m talking espresso….not decaf drip coffee.
Please share!

  1. Got your message and I loved the “insist” part. It made Marc and I smile. I will let you know exact dates ASAP. As for this drink, when I visit I am on a mission to make a drink like that for you. OR, I could buy one before we leave and keep it in an ice chest for you!! HAHA that would be AWESOME!! Loved visiting with you my sweet, easy going, lovely, lovely friend!! Friend for life!!

  2. That drink sounds mouthwatering! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a tasty coffee substitute! What a predicament you are in my dear 🙂

  3. Could you source some ingredients and make it at home? I know things taste better when someone else makes these things but you may just strike gold in your kitchen 😉

  4. I couldn’t stop drinking coffee while I was pregnant… well the last few months I had to give it up because I got really bad heart burns from drinking coffee, but oh I missed it!

  5. Oh no! No coffee might just kill me, but I definitely understand your reasoning… Hmmm… Perhaps you could drink some really fancy decaf espresso? Is that still bad? I know I’m not creative at all, but I LIVE off of coffee. I try to quit every couple years and it only makes me cross, irritable and sleepy! Haha!

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  6. I don’t know if you have a Keurig but if you do they have a few options. They actually have a few Decaf espresso. I have the rainforest espresso and I have used it a few times to make some iced lattes. I’m a fan of Starbucks Toffee Nut Latte, so I use Moin Toffee Nut Syrup with it. They also have a Cafe Mocha which is actually 1/2 hot cocoa and 1/2 coffee. It’s a little sweeter than the espresso but It’s one of my favs.

  7. Hmmmmm, I don’t know friend! I guess the closest ting I could think of would be Starbucks decaf via packets, which hardly compare to Portland-quality espresso. Sorry!! But you could easily recreate that drink at home with Silk coconut milk and dark chocolate syrup?

  8. Lord I could not even imagine. You could always get decaf espresso. Or anything with dark chocolate is going to have a less sweet taste.

  9. well after the morning sickness has passed with each pregnancy, I allow myself 1 cup of coffee each day. I make my own at home usually but sometimes I splurge on a local coffee shop. i figure the baby needs to get used to some caffeine intake because she’s definitely going to get it when i’m nursing. :)heehee at least that’s the way it worked for my other three babes.
I wonder if Stumptown has a coffee-free drink that still tastes expressoish?

  10. I went from 6 cups of coffee a day to nothing cold turkey when I found out I was expecting. I didn’t start drinking my daily allowance until I was 16 weeks, so I feel your pain!!

  11. Aw, I would miss coffee too! Perhaps a frozen drink with something like cocoa in it? I enjoy making smoothies, like blueberries, milk, cocoa powder, and ice. I know it’s not the same, but it could still be something to feel like a treat?

  12. Maybe mocha-scented soap and lotion would be good? Or maybe it would make you crave the drink more…hmm. Coffee ice cream blended with vanilla almond milk with dark chocolate on top could be a yummy milkshake! At any rate, I admire you waiting until later to have a bit. 🙂

  13. I keep wondering how I’ll behave when I am pregnant with no coffee. I have serious headaches when I don’t drink coffee for a day =/

I’ll be def coming back here to find out about your coffee substitutes!

now, i miss my pre-baby body. haha
