sunshine and a good book.

When I was pregnant with Fern, I read to her approximately 20 times a day….

because as a preschool teacher I was always reading to my students.  Perhaps it was all that reading in utero, but whatever the case, she seems to really enjoy reading books together.

My brother-in-law is convinced she’s going to grow up to drive a Volvo and be a librarian.  A librarian named Fern…kind of the cutest ever, no?
With all this reading, we’ve definitely developed some favorites:
The illustrations are so cute and I love that it let’s me introduce Fern to my favorite grown-up book in little kid form.
So, this isn’t a book for babies, but I love it anyway.  It’s a Bible for kids, still pretty advanced, but I like  to read the stories to Fern.  I could pretty much read her the dictionary at this stage and she’d enjoy listening.  She really likes the pictures though and I like starting to teach her about Bible stories.
This story about a peace-loving little bull is probably my most favorite kids book ever and the black and white illustrations are great for babies who enjoy high contrast pictures.
The pictures in this are the cutest and it has a good message of being content with what you have.
This is a Charlotte’s Web picture book!  It tells the story of Fern and Wilbur…perfect for our little Fern.  I think she’s going to love this when she’s older – I remember always getting so excited when I found books with my name in them, so maybe she’ll be the same.
Big thick board book – perfect for chewing on AND learning numbers at the same time.
I think I could read this book in my sleep and it just makes me happy.  “Big F, little F, what begins with F?  Four fluffy feathers on a fiffer feffer feff!”
Fern is ALWAYS hungry…just like this little caterpillar, and thus I find this book quite endearing.
Do you have any favorite children’s books I should read to Fern?

  1. That’s incredible! I want to keep this in mind for when I decide to have children. I was always a little tot that loved to read to but I watch young children and most of them have no interest now with all the little gadgets lying around the house.

  2. I love Hungry Caterpillar! My Goddaughter’s Mum has been reading her the Narnia books (I think Fern might be a little little to get them but my Goddaughter is 5 in September)

  3. I love your book choices! I will definitely have to find the Pride & Prejudice one:)

  4. My 1yr old son is obsessed with Dr Seuss’ Mr Brown Can Moo. He loves the rhymes and all the noises that are in the book 🙂 I’m going to have to find that Dr Seuss ABC book you mentioned. I think he would like that book a lot.

  5. What a sweet post. One of my favorite childhood books was Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion 🙂

  6. I love this. I love that you read to Fern before she was even born. If God blesses me with a child, I hope he/she has a love for books just as I do. I think this is why any baby shower gift I give usually includes a book. 🙂

  7. I definitely don’t have a cute little Fern to read to but “Five Minutes Peace” and “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” were my favorites growing up!

  8. yes! “the piggy in the puddle’ so fun, i still love it, my mom would do funny brit voices for the piggies, plus it’s a reading rainbow book. i also adored King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub – you’ll die over the illustrations. and finally The Rainbabies by Laura Krauss Melmed….beautiful.

  9. Love this post! I will be adding some of these books to my sons collection.

  10. Once she gets older you should read her the Skippyjon Jones series. Of course, parts must be read in a Spanish accent. 🙂 Love your list so far!

  11. Ferdinand reminds me so much of our dog Roxy. We really need to get that book for Pearl.

  12. Who doesn’t love the Hungry Hungry Caterpillar?! Great selection…I thought after my years and years of nannying that I knew every childrens book. I guess I have some catching up to do!

  13. I always loved If You Give A Mouse A Cookie =-)

I plan on reading LOTS to my children… I’m a total bookworm and I hope my future kids will be too!

  14. I love this one called Good Night Gorilla. I like it more than Good Night Moon. We also do a lot of Sandra Boynton books…they usually have a fun little diddy in them that make us all giggle. 😉

  15. Oh, and Mr. Men and Little Miss by Roger Hargreaves. I remember them from my childhood!

  16. love this! Reading is so so important, Fern obviously knows this!

    And Ferdinand is awesome.

  17. My little girl LOVES Carl Goes Shopping. She is almost 17 months old and is very into babies and dogs. They have always loved Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see? and we read Pete the Cat at least once a day. My kids love books and it makes me so happy. I feel like it is my duty for them to love to read. They were also read to a million times a day because I’m a teacher.

  18. the pride and prejudice board book is so cute! i teach preschool so i have a million that i just love, and children’s lit was my favorite college course. dr. seuess is my all time fave, and i love the giving tree, but i really do cry every time. oh! the places you’ll go gets me every time too. my cureent fave read is called, ‘the three little aliens and the big bad roibot’. i had it on my wishlist during the book fair and a mom got it for my class. it is the most adorable take on ‘the three little pigs’ and the artwork is adorable 🙂 it’s probably more for 4-5 year olds and it’s read almost daily!
