5 tips for holiday decorating.

Decorating for the holidays can be fun OR stressful depending on your frame of mind…

…and if you happen to fall into the camp of those who find it stressful, I’m here to help you out with a few tips to help get your house in holiday shape without breaking the bank and/or going insane.

1. Work with what you have

I like making my house look cute, but I’m not willing to spend a ton to do it, so my main method of decorating is scavenging around my own home. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the easiest, like drawing a reindeer on a chalkboard and hanging a glittery star ornament in front of it. Done.
2. Borrow from Nature

I happen to have a forest in my backyard, so sprigs of greens were pretty easy to come by and make for simple, yet dramatic decor. But, even if you don’t have a backyard forest, it’s likely that you have some type of greenery you can scavenge and stick in a vase/jar/cup. It’s free and nothing livens up a space quite like plant life.

3. Mix in textures

Playing with textures makes your decor feel more authentic and inviting and less forced. Play around with fabrics, wood, enamel…whatever!

4. Restyle

Don’t get tied into feeling like you have to use objects for their original purpose. Flip a bowl upside down to turn it into a pedestal for a found object, or use a cup as a vase. Don’t let your creativity be stifled.

5. Listen to holiday music while you decorate

I recommend the Sufjan Stevens Holiday station on Pandora…but that’s just me.

*6. BONUS: Wear fuzzy slippers

I know I said there would only be five tips, but seriously…everything is better when you’re wearing fuzzy slippers – especially holiday decorating!

Have fun!
