how to….make flourless chocolate cake a’la olivia!

Today’s guest blogger is probably one you already know and love.  She is queen of the kitchen and I’m forever drooling over the delicious concoctions she whips up over at her blog Everyday Musings.  One you may have already cooked up that I’m dying to try (but keep forgetting about every time I go to the grocery store) is her Cauliflower Gratin.  Yum!  So…without further ado….here’s Olivia!

Flourless Chocolate Cake (with Ovaltine)

This recipe is so easy and requires so few ingredients, you could make it an hour before a dinner party and have an elegant dessert. I’m a big proponent of baking with what I have, so I’m always substituting ingredients. In this case I didn’t have cocoa powder so I used Ovaltine. I actually loved the subtle malt flavor it added to the cake.

4 oz unsweetened chocolate
one stick butter
one cup brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup Ovaltine
3 eggs

1. Melt unsweetened chocolate & butter over a double boiler (or in a covered pan on low heat).
2. Whisk in the sugar and eggs.
3. Add Ovaltine.
4. Bake at 375 for (about) 20 minutes.

I garnished mine with a little Ovaltine, powdered sugar, and a ton of blueberries – but you can really do whatever you want with it! See how super easy? This is my kind of dessert – simple, but decadent.

  22. olivia was one of my very first blogs i stumbled across and i still love her so much! this literally just made my mouth water, haha and i wish i could use the word decadent like she does without sounding crazy:) great post olivia, and lauren im still loving this series idea!

  23. okay, sorry i’ve been mia, but this stupid computer is so slow it takes like 2 days for pages to load! anyway, i’m actually not a fan of chocolate at all (with the exception of about 3 days a month), but i’m sure chris would LOVE this cake! i’ll have to write the recipe down and make it for his birthday.

and regarding on of your earlier posts, YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL! you shouldn’t worry about your weight (this coming from someone who runs like a maniac trying to lose the butt genetics cursed me with), but i know that being a woman makes that impossible. plus, being married to a skinny man makes it that much worse. chris is so skinny you can barely see him when he turns sideways, and i always try to tell him he’s lucky, and if he had the hormones of a woman, he’d know why i’m as squishy as i am!

anyway, i hope you’ve had a good day, and have a happy thursday!

  24. Mmmmm I love this!! Olivia is beautiful and her recipes are always the best!! Love this How To series Lauren … you are the most clever lady I know!! XO
