fashion risks.

Sometimes you have to take risks with fashion
to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

Example:  The other day I wore this scarf….

When Craig saw my outfit, the following dialogue ensued:

Craig:  “Are you wearing a table cloth around your neck???”

Me:  “No! It’s a scarf!”

Craig:  “No seriously – are you making the bed with that thing?”

Me: (eye roll)

Craig:  “That’s WAY too big!”

Me:  “It’s just fabric – 3 yards maybe – but it’s supposed to be oversized.”

Craig:  “Oversized is a bit of an understatement.”

Me:  “Whatever – you just don’t know anything about fashion.”

Craig:  “Some people need to take fashion risks, but maybe you should take less.”

Me:  “Just be thankful you aren’t married to someone who wears sweatpants all the time.”

Craig:  (SILENCE).

Me: “Touché.”

Coco Chanel said it best:
“I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little – if only out of politeness.  And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny.  And it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.”

So….the moral of the story is:
“It is far, far better to take fashion risks and sometimes look a bit ridiculous than to spend your life in ratty sweatpants.”

(OK…if I’m honest, this thing is the size of our queen bed sheets, but hey-you never know until you try something, right?  I think I’ll be cutting this down to a more manageable size, but I’m still never admitting Craig was right!)

Take a fashion risk today.  Life’s too short not to.

And make sure to let me know how it goes :).

  1. haha that’s so funny!
    I guess Craig was right.
    😉

  2. Oh my goodness it is a big scarf, but I love it!! What is life without a few risks, and fashion risks definitely dont hurt anyone.

  3. I love the oversized scarf. My husband is the opposite. He’s always the one taking the risks and I question him.

  5. this post made me laugh. i love the quote from coco too, how true is that? so, advice taken…

i wore a neon orange wind breaker coat on my way to work today, paired with a skirt and hot pink shoes. while the wind breaker wasnt exactly part of the outfit, i was looking hella damn ’80s walking into the office!

  6. I have one scarf I love that is massive. I could probably use it as a blanket its so big. But I love it for windy days and, worn correctly, it looks pretty cool. I say keep it like you have it! it’s cute

  7. Ha, I love the last 2 pics. I kind of took a fasion risk the other night when i wore a new orange scarf that I made out of a t-shirt. I think my husband thought it looked weird but a couple of my friends asked me where I got it so I deem that a success. Here’s my post about it http://makingstuffisfun.blogspot.com/2011/03/t-shirt-scarf.html .

  8. That’s hilarious! Don’t worry, my husband and I have those conversations and I have to remind him there’s a difference between GUY-hot and GIRL-hot. Sometimes they just don’t understand! Next time I’m totally going to use your argument when it comes up, “Just be thankful you aren’t married to someone who wears sweatpants all the time.”

  9. This morning I am thankful for this post. I need to remind myself to be more adventurous with my attire and get out of this postpartum go-to jeans and t-shirt. Especially now that warmer months are just around the corner!

  10. haha! You could turn that into a dress! It’s cute fabric though. That’s ok — this morning I walked into the kitchen and my father delicately told me that my skirt was not flattering to my hips! O_O

  11. haha LOVE the scarf girl 😉 even if it is a lil bit, who cares! you can rock it! happy thursday pretty girl!

  12. lol!! i agree who wants to be boring anyway, give me oversized polka dots any day of the week!! x

  13. Hi! This is my first post since I came across your fabulous blog. I love the archive. I also want to take a risk in fashion so that I can open up my horizon in fashion, but it is very hard to break the comfort zone…

  14. I like it!! 🙂
and I love yours and Craig’s conversation!! FUNNY!!

  15. Hee hee hee, that scarf is brilliant!

  16. This sounds so much like my husband. Love this post!

  17. I LOVED this post!! Seriously, the things our husbands feel entitled to say to us…haha!

  18. LOL! I love your touche. He’s definitely lucky you don’t wear sweatpants all the time.

  19. Haha, that’s hilarious. I hate to agree with him but it is a little on the large side. However, I’m not a scarf fan so what do I know!? lol

Keep on taking those fashion risks 😉

  20. haha love this post! My boyfriend and I have conversations like that ALL THE TIME!

  21. I love it! I love the pattern and the colors! I would definitely wear it!

  22. I have had many similar conversations with my man. Keep fighting the good fight dear!

  23. hahahahahahaha i LOVE LOVE LOVE this post!! men + fashion always equals an interesting conversation. i’m on your side here, it’s so much better to take fashion risks than to wander around in ratty sweatpants!!

Oh, and i love that quote. it’s perfection. maybe even my new motto… 🙂

  24. Sounds like Jeremy.

That is a massive scarf, but the polka dot is so cute!

  25. I don’t want to take sides or anything…but I love the scarf and solute you for trying something new. I am a total creature of habit. I love classic traditional things. Thanks for the reminder to take a risk every now and then. 🙂

  26. This was hilarious and sounds like most convos I have with my bf…. seriously…. why don’t they get it? haha and I seriously NEVER admit that he had a point….

  27. Haha, I’m proud of you! Bravo for wearing an oversized OVERSIZED scarf:) Be bold!

  28. hhaahha i loveee the convo you had with your man. i have had similar convos with mine!!

  29. Haha! That is so something my hubby would say too. Sometimes I come out of the bathroom and he just gives me that look of bewilderment:-) xoxo

  30. Ha! Lauren – I take risks with my work wardrobe and I get a hard time from my bosses who have a very “tradition” ( read: oldfashioned) view of Business Attire.

I wore a Circle Scarf to work the other day and someone told me it “looks like you pulled a t-shirt over your head but didn’t put your arms through”.

this coming from a man who tucks his tie into pants.

  31. That scarf looks way bigger unraveled than around your neck. I didn’t think it looked bad, but it might look super awesome cut down, you ever know, until you try. I guess you could always sew it back together if you wanted to, it’s so big the seam would be lost in the folds anyway. boys are funny.

  32. Hahaha! That is awesome. Thanks for the reminder to take risks – I am always too safe with my fashion!

  33. oh my gosh, I love it 🙂

  34. I’m not gunna lie… my sweatpants replace my jeans/skirt/gym pants as soon as I get home. haha!

  35. Such a cute post!! Love it

  36. your post totally made me LOL 😀 (at work!)

love the scarf.. tho it is just a tad big! keep rocking the fashion risks!! (I almost bought white jeans today.. say what!?!) no harm, no foul!!

    xx

  37. Haha, sometimes husbands are so funny. Jus is well aware of how lucky he is that I don’t wear sweats all the time 🙂

  38. Ha, craig and lauren dialogue is always priceless. Love you guys and love how you look ADORABLE in your little stretchy pants. Miss you friend,Dana.

  39. YAY! You’re my favorite <3

  40. this morning…

husband: um, babe? you look like an old lady’s table cloth

me: no way! i like my pretty floral dress.

husband: you’re right. it looks more like an old lady’s drapes, actually.

(my dress is super cute, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about!)

  41. Great post! I have my 16 year old daughter to stop me before I get out the door in anything too risky!! Just hearing “Mom, are you wearing that” is enough!

    Cherie

  42. Cute!! You can totally pull it off.

    Cute blog!!

    Have a wonderful day 🙂

    Love,

  43. LOL! this is funny! i’d have to agree with craig! that fabric can fit both of us, and then some!

  44. LOL……Love the conversation with Craig! Sounds like my husband and I.
    Cute scarf!

  45. this cracked me up!!! 🙂

the photos with your table cloth are the best though! 🙂 and so is craig’s part of the convo 😉

  46. Glad to know I’m not the only one with an opinionated man in her life. Ricky’s always giving me fashion “advice,” too. 😉

  47. Even though the fabric is the size of a queen flat sheet, you can put it to so many uses, a scarf when you are cold, a blanket when you are traveling on the plane, a beach blanket, a sarong. It is a fashion risk but it’s also a very versatile items on have on you.

Just look at Jessica Alba, she always wears gigantic scarves but she rocks them!
