From Christmas Grinch To Christmas Cheer

Christmas has never been my thing. I mean, of course I loved is as a child when all I cared about was presents, but as I became an adult, it lost its luster. The magic was gone and commercialism had taken its place. I was totally disenchanted.

So for the years after we got married until Fern was born we didn’t really make a big deal about it. We would do stockings for each other, but they were low key and we DIY’d all of our Christmas gifts for others and then donated money to Living Water International. I actually did love doing the DIY presents and being able to donate money to a charity we cared about, but aside from that, Christmas always felt a little ho-hum.

But, then we had Fern and it’s like a switch in me flipped. Suddenly I loved the holidays. There’s jut something about kids that makes everything more magical. The look on her face when she sees Christmas lights or a tree dressed with bulbs is just the sweetest. I wish I could bottle that magic.

This year I’m already getting into the spirit and it’s not even Thanksgiving! A few little Christmas-y things that have been happening…

Fern is totally obsessed with these Christmas lights and when she sees them will remind me to, “Pug in da lights Mama!”

Christmas countdown thanks to the dollar section at Target. I can’t believe Christmas is so close!

Sufjan Stevens Holiday radio on Pandora playing non-stop. Fern isn’t a super fan. No rap or hip hop to be found, but I love it so sometimes I make her listen with me anyway. Also, this is a great station for people who aren’t big Christmas music fans. If you hate Maria Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (raises hand) then you’ll probably love this.

This Mrs. Meyers Iowa Pine soap. It always comes out around the holidays and I stockpile it like a hoarder picking up a bottle every time I go to the grocery store. It smells like Christmas in a bottle though – can you blame me?

Are you getting in the holiday spirit yet? I’m honestly kind of wishing tree lots were open already, because I would totally be convincing Craig that we need one :).

Hope you guys have a good weekend!

Love and holiday cheer,

Lauren

  1. I have felt a little lack luster the past few years about Christmas, but strangely enough I always get super amped about Halloween. I dont know what it is about that holiday that I absolutely LOVE…Maybe its the costumes or all of the pumpkin flavored treats, or the excuse to bust out the scarves and boots. I dont even know what I am going to do with myself once I have kids. I’m going to be out of control with the holidays and decorations, in the best way of course! HAHA

  2. Isn’t it ridiculous how much better Christmas is with a child? I’m bursting with excitement too!

  3. I’ve always loved Christmas and the holidays, but it’s never been a big deal to my husband. I’m wondering if that’ll change once we start having kids 🙂
All the nieces and nephews are good practice though.

    • It’s never been my husband’s thing, and he still doesn’t get into it, but he definitely loves seeing our daughter’s face light up, so at least there’s some magic in that :).

  4. I’m going to have to get some of that soap!! The weekend after next you can get a big, beautiful tree of your choosing for only $35 and all proceeds support a local mama who is raising money for her daughter’s surgery. She is an incredibly, giving, kind, creative, hard working mama. Please spread the word!
