What Fern Wore: 2nd Birthday Edition

Yesterday was Fern’s birthday and to commemorate the occasion she wore an outfit that was quite possibly one of my most favorite in the history of ever for a morning of adventure. She requested a “ballina” skirt and I made sure to deliver with one that would suit both of our aesthetics – a bit of girly tomboy and I LOVE this look!

dress worn as skirt: H&M (similar)

headband: c/o Drop of Honey Bowtique

shoes: Converse

Obviously the outfit was so adorable that many (many) more photos ensued. I was actually pretty impressed with some of her poses…however inadvertent they may have been. This girl is definitely no stranger to the camera. Poor blogger’s kid!

She also requested that her doll wear a “ballina” dress as well…

After snapping a few photos we headed on for the rest of our adventure! A birthday breakfast donut from Blue Star + milk. I let Fern pick out her donut and naturally she chose the pink one. I can’t blame her though – it was delicious! Then we headed over to The Ace to eat our treat, because while I love Blue Star, but their stools are a bit precarious for the toddler set.

And of course no trip to The Ace Hotel would be complete without taking a few photo booth pics. I kind of love these. She didn’t figure out what was going on until photo #3!

When we got home there was a gift awaiting Fern from her friend Bennett and she was so excited. She kept carrying around the card he made her saying, “Bennett made it for ME!” and she fell asleep hugging that Minnie Mouse book. It was so sweet.

We came home for a nap…for Fernie and Mama. I’m feeling pretty under the weather, but I still braved a trip out of the house because I believe in making birthdays special. I was pooped though!

After nap our families came over to celebrate and I made one of Fern’s favorites for dinner – Mac & Cheese. Then we had an ice cream bar for dessert, which was obviously her favorite part. There’s no way we needed near this much ice cream, but I wanted her to have options, because what fun is an ice cream bar if there’s nothing to choose from? Fern loaded up her bowl with “pink and geen eye keem” and every bright colored topping we had. It was like toddler heaven. I felt a little guilty at first for not going all “blogger mom” and having elaborate decorations or a birthday theme for her, but when she saw the ice cream, I knew none of that mattered anyway :).

I’m quite certain Fern thought the ice cream bar was a bit more fun than the healthy cake we made last year. It was still good, but let’s be real…nothing tops rainbow colored sweets.

And at the end of a very full day she had a hard time falling asleep. She woke up after a bit to a bad dream and Daddy went in to comfort her. After awhile I wondered what was taking so long and went in to take a peek. I could only snap a blurry picture, but this photo of Craig snuggled up next to his girl was just about the sweetest thing ever. My heart melted all over the floor. I love seeing him as daddy to a daughter.

And there you have it! Fern’s 2nd birthday celebration photo dump! I can’t believe I have a two-year-old!

Love and birthdays,

Lauren

  1. Pearl calls it eye keem too. We have a little gift for Fern. Are you going to be at Sprouts on Wed? I’m hoping to make it, but Pearl has a weird cough. Anyway, if I don’t see you there I will get it to you eventually. Hope you are feeling better!

    • Kira – We should be there. I’ve been sick all week, but assuming I’ll be better by then :). HOPING I’ll be better by then or I might go crazy! I love that The Per calls it eye keem too :). Kindred spirits. Haha! Hope to see you next week friend!

Just have to say, that middle photo and the bottom left, are the cutest! My daughter hasn’t become a poser (her brother went thru a phase, can’t remember how old he was) – I really look forward to the next 5 months before my baby girl turns 2, sounds like it could be very full on!!
Also look forward to seeing lots more Fern, always love looking thru your instagram pics

  10. Looks like Fern had a perfect birthday. LOVE her outfit! I’ve been stressing out over the details of my little girl’s birthday in May and reading your post helped me realize that I don’t need all the bells and whistles to make it a special day for my Anna. Love how you keep it simple and classy.

  11. Oh my gosh I’m dying of all the sweetness! I love Fern’s outfit…girly but not like “ohmygodunicorns” girly. We’ll done on that score.

  12. I just can’t stand the cuteness! Our daughter turns two next Friday (sob.) and I am still trying to figure out how to spend her birthday day. Donuts might be a great place to start!!
