What Fern Wore: Dandy Lion Co.

It has been girly, girl princess city over here lately thanks to my toddler. I find it rather ironic considering the fact that I rarely ever buy Fern anything pink and we were actually pretty anti-princess, but… the heart wants what the heart wants. Despite all the gender neutral ensembles I’ve purchased and the wonderful wooden learning toys, this one gravitates towards all things frilly, sparkly and flowery. It’s just who she is.

Multiple times a day (like at least a hundred) I find her in her room, twirling about while singing made up little songs about how fancy she is and how she’s as pretty as a princess. Also, she refuses to wear anything that doesn’t twirl. Several meltdowns have resulted when I’ve dared to affront her fashion sense with something so dreadful and boring at jeans. I think this is probably payback for all the black and grey I dressed her in as a baby. 

Thankfully I’ve begun finding items that will fulfill Fern’s love of girliness and also my own aesthetic (AKA not purple, pink, sequined frilliness) at the same time. Dandy Lion Co. is one of them.

Dandy Lion Co is a lovely Etsy shop owned by Chrystina Winston and based out of Portland, Oregon (yay for local designers!) and both Fern and I are smitten with her creations. The colors and patterns are bright, fun and full of whimsy without becoming too saccharine-y sweet. Everything Chrystina creates has a cool, modern feel while still appealing to my toddler’s girly girl aesthetic which is perfect!

Here are a few outfits I put together for Fern using pieces from Dandy Lion Co. that Chrystina sent us. Oh, and please excuse Fern’s unruly mop of curls…sometimes it’s not worth fighting the battle to tame them. Also, excuse any construction mess…our room is a work in progress, but it seriously has the best light!

OUTFIT #1: The high waisted skirts and shorts in Chrystina’s shop are the cutest and they were just twirly enough to get the Fern stamp of approval. Also I love this cool botanical print!

OUTFIT #2: Tunics are a great option for the toddler who loves dresses. She still felt “fancy” in this top and I was able to coax her into a pair of jeans. It was a win/win for all. Also…the cowl scarf is ridiculously cute.

OUTFIT #3: This particular skirt is actually not available in the shop anymore, but it comes in a ton of other patterns that are equally fantastic. I love it with the tucked in tunic!
