What Fern Wore: Tomboy Pink

We are currently in the trenches of what I’ve come to (not-so)lovingly refer to as “The Twirly Dress Phase”. This means exactly what you think it means…my two-and-a-half year old will not tolerate anything that isn’t a dress that twirls. She literally wakes up in the morning and the first thing she says when I walk into her room is, “Mama, let’s take off my pajamas and put on a dress.” No “Good morning Mom!”…just straight to the point.

Oh…and God forbid if I choose a dress that “isn’t twirly enough”. Hell hath no fury like a toddler scorned by being made to wear a dress that doesn’t freaking twirl enough. Many a tantrum has been had over this type of minutiae… #toddlerproblems.

This girl of mine is girly to her core. If it’s pink, purple or sparkly she’s all over it. My friends tell me it’s payback for dressing her in so many neutrals as a baby. Whatever the case, it is who she is and I’m OK with it (save for those tantrums, because no way in hell I’m giving her a twirly dress after one of those numbers).

I did however realize a little trick to compromising with her on the matter of dresses…if I want her to wear a non-dress, I have to find a girly element to balance it out, which is how I got her on board with these super cute jeans. They’re girly enough for her liking because they’re pink, but they’re not Pepto-pink, so I was on board. I tempered them with a chambray shirt and a unisex tank and threw in a floral hair bow to sweeten the deal. Mom trickery for the win.

Wish me luck for the day she completely refuses any of my outfit suggestions. I’m pretty sure it’s not that far away.

  1. Lil Fern is quite the fashion girl! I love the pink jeans! 🙂

  2. I’m surprised she still lets you pick her clothes out! My son is about the same age and hasn’t let me pick his clothes out for months now. I kind of love the weird combinations he comes up with, though, so it is fine by me.

    • @Tarynkay – I’ve gotta be honest…sometimes bribery was involved. In this case we were at the beach and I took advantage of her lack of closet to choose from and only brought along pants :).

  3. Adorbs!!! Bravo for getting her into a “just girlie enough” outfit (one that I’d be super into wearing, myself). And I love you for totally seeing a temper tantrum as a full-on challenge. “Nope, will NOT give in.” I do the same, although having a boy helps in the wardrobe department. 😉

  4. Hi Lauren! I’ve been following your blog and enjoyed reading your posts and seeing your little darlings get cuter by the day. I’ve nominated you for a fun little blog award to let you know that your posts are inspirational to others 🙂 Here are the details: http://sunnydaysundays.com/2014/08/20/thanks-for-the-blog-award/

    Congrats!
