Not Yoga Pants: My Mama Travel Uniform

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a “Not Yoga Pants” post, but I was feeling inspired by our upcoming trip to Maui (T-minus 8 days!) and wanted put together a little travel inspired outfit inspiration.

While this will be my first time traveling to Hawaii, I am no stranger to flying with kids and I’ve learned through trial and error what clothing choices work best as a mama with littles. This outfit may appear simple, but it’s perfect for mamas…comfy and casual, but not yoga pants.

Not Yoga Pants: My Mama Travel Uniform // @ The Little Things We Do

1. Backpack Don’t even bother with a purse or a diaper bag. You’ll likely be carrying one (or more) children and schlepping their stuff around. A backpack is perfect for this. I love this one from Fjallraven because it’s a good size, but still stylish and streamlined…not huge and bulky with a ton of extra unnecessary pockets.

2. Oversized Top

God bless the oversized t-shirt trend. Makes life infinitely easier (and discreet!) for nursing mamas. It’s also comfy and friendly to the postpartum body.

3. Large Infinity Scarf I always get chilly on planes, but carrying around a blanket is a pain. A large jersey infinity scarf is the perfect solution. This one fromAmerican Apparel is massive and can be worn as a shawl or used as a nursing cover and simply be worn on your neck so you don’t have an extra item taking up space on your carry-on.

4. Clutch

Clutches are key to not losing your mind while navigating airport check-in and security. Keep all of your essential items in your clutch (boarding passes, passports, ID, etc…) so they can be easily accessed without digging around in your bag. I actually recommend using a few clutches to stay organized. I usually have a clutch for all of my own personal items, one for snacks and one for kids stuff. Makes everything much more streamlined.

5. Jeans

You could totally rock leggings just as easily (and I sometimes do), but I feel a bit more pulled together if I swap out leggings for jeans. A slouchy boyfriend style will keep you just as comfy as those yoga pants.

6. Watch

Of course you have your phone, but when I’m traveling, I’m constantly watching the time so I don’t miss my flight and it’s more convenient to have a watch than it is to keep pulling my phone out of my pocket a bajillion times. It’s also the only accessory I recommend wearing (aside from simply stud earrings, just because I always wear earrings), because nobody wants to be stopped going through security. The less accessories you have to remove, the better.

7. Slip-On Shoes

Going through security, you’ll want a shoe that’s easy to take on and off and these fit the bill perfectly. I wear mine all day err day. They’re casual, but have a bit of a polished look to them, which I like. Plus, they’re really comfortable.

And there you have it. My Mama Travel Uniform!

Happy travels friends!

Love,

Lauren

  1. Why haven’t I ever thought of a backpack before?! Next time it is definitely a stylish backpack! I also, love the scarf. Thanks for the tips.

  2. How exciting! My husband and I want to take a trip to Hawaii but we have a 3 month old. We would likely go when baby is actually 15-16 months. Makes me super nervous to fly with a baby and what to expect, pack, how to maintain a sleep routine (when that happens…) and all. It’s motivating to see other families do this, especially when you have a wee one in tow. One thing though, How do you change a diaper on a plane? Thanks!!

    • @Shelby – Haha! Yeah…changing a diaper on a plane is less than ideal. There’s a fold-down changing table above the toilet in the bathroom. SO, SO tiny, but it’ll work in a pinch.

  3. I think it’s funny you are so apposed to yoga pants! I tried swapping out my jeans for leggings but I couldn’t do it, I felt sloppy. Too bad, they were really comfortable.

  4. i love that shirt! Oversized shirts and infinity scarfs are a nursing mama’s best friend. I used to wear a maxi skirt when we traveled because it felt like I was wearing a blanket :). It also helped with the climate change from mild southern CA to the hot and humid east coast summer. Now I just wear some Lepard print harem pants from H&M that are comfortable beyond words.

  5. I’m not even a mamma and I’d wear everything here! Love the watch! xoxo
